dcalsv02 Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 I am in the process of putting a billet basket in and i read that the factory gear breaks very easy with any motor that is over stock compression. Is this true? Do I need to put a new gear on before I put this basket on or is my stock one fine? Quote

You should contact a builder on here like HJR or F.A.S.T and ask them about that. Quote

Here is where I read it. http://www.askinmotorsports.com/gear.html Quote
monstermike Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 I've never heard of that Post what you find out if u call someone. What kinda compression are you runnin Quote
dcalsv02 Posted January 2, 2012 Author Report Posted January 2, 2012 I don't have a compression tester, but Im running 17cc domes on ported stock cyls. Quote
Tedder Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 The factory gear can break if the motor kicks back when starting. This happens most often in bigger "built" motors with advanced timing. There's also a weak spot around the kicker area of the clutch cover itself that will sometimes bust out. Quote
monstermike Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 I got same same set up but 18cc ill keep an eye on it Quote
dcalsv02 Posted January 2, 2012 Author Report Posted January 2, 2012 So then this is only an issue when building the big motors? Quote
monstermike Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 That's what it seemed like tedder was saying Quote
BigRed350x Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 You can fix the kick-back breaking the clutch cover pretty easy. Machine the white polyurethane bushing down a few mm and weld a washer on the kicker shaft behind the poly bushing. The kick-back usually only happens with lots of timing advance though. Don't kick it like a sissy and it shouldn't be a problem. - Jared Quote
THE358BANSH Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 Mine broke once, most people said it was from not kicking quick enough. I replaced it with a used stock one and it's going strong still. I still kick like a puss, but my engine bangs off way quicker now. Quote
