I just purchased a set of cases from a guy in detroit, Is there any way to tell if the cases are a matched set and not a couple different motors put together?

yes, theres a hand engraved code to the right of the rear motor mount on the cases, same letters and numbers should be on the top and bottom.

You can almost always notice little variances on the stator side where they machine the outside edge of the cases for the stator cover as well. The matched sets line up damn near perfect, the un-matched sets never line up perfect.

Not to get to off topic but the old lt250r-trx250r middle split cases can be a nightmare if they are mis matched

its a crap shoot. i wouldn t either.

I've run them. Never had any problems. But I've heard of people who have had crank and trans failures due to the bearing to case clearances.
