VegasVinny Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 (edited) I have a 2000 banshee that I bought 2 seasons ago. It's had a ticking sound in the left(stators side) of the case. I've pulled the stator cover off and and checked it out but the ticking doesn't seem to be coming from the stator. I've had people tell me it could be a bearing in the crank or the typical "every banshee makes some kind of odd sound". For the last two seasons I've told myself if it breaks, it breaks, then I'll fix it up a bit. It's mostly stock besides fmf pipes and silencers. Recently it takes 5-10 kicks to start. Used to start up 1-3. Figured I'd check the compression. Left cylinder is 100. Right cylinder is 112. A buddy told me it's a sign that the bearing could be the cause for the difference in compression, something to do with stress on the crank. I don't have the money to dump into my banshee at the moment so I've just been avoiding the problem. I'm bummed cause I'm suppose to go to Dumont on Monday. So tell me what you guys think. I've been lurking on here quite a bit and you guys definitely seem to know your banshees. Edited January 7, 2011 by VegasVinny Quote
Josh Z Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 way too low of compression! a stock banshee I belive starts in the 140s and usually you need a bore job and new pistons and rings in the 120s or anything lower than that. AND. usually if you get more than 4-5 psi in each cyl then its bad news too. either you ran it too lean or you have a leak that causes that cylinder to run too lean. as for hard to start. yes. low compression makes you kick and kick and it just wont happe. Get a new top end put on it and do a leak down test. and make sure you jet in correctly for each place you go. it doesn't hurt to pull your plugs and check them throughout the day too. read the jetting help page if you need it. Good luck! Quote
Larry's Shee Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 HEY !! Welcome to the H.Q. !! Fresh stock engine is 130-135 , rebuild range is about 100. You're less than 2% difference, 5% is about the limit. They do get harder to start when they start to get tired. Bad reeds , dirty carbs , fouled plugs also make for hard starting. How does it run when you do get it started ? What do your plugs look like ? Only you know how much you've rode in the last two seasons with the ticking and wether it has gotten worse or louder. You somewhat answered your own ? , if it breaks it breaks Long as your not running lean and the noise hasn't been getting worse I'd ride it. JMHO, your results may vary. Have fun, be safe !! Quote
midlifecrisis Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Welcome brother! Im with both Josh and Larry on this one. If its running lean and you can correct it before it blows a piston up and throws shcrapnel into the bottom end, then its gonna save you money, but if you dont have the funds to fix it right now and it hasnt got any worse over 2 years then go with it, and "if it breaks it breaks". The problem is, that by ignoring it you will end up costing yourself more.. The bottom line is, if youre in the top end to fix it, or at least to look at the issue close up, then your half way to investigating the bottom end as well. Its way cheaper to crack the cases, replace the bearing and seals than it is to have to possibly replace the crank, rods, pistons & head if it melts down. JMO! Good luck with it Quote
boise_banshee Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Depends on your elevation. Here is a handy-dandy chart thanks to Noss Machine, which is a site sponsor. I am almost 3,000 ft up, so good stock comprestion for me is-112. Sea Level is 130. What is your elevation?? Approximate Cranking Compression These pressures are estimates based on fresh stock bore, piston, porting, and deck height. Sea Level 1000' 2000' 3000' 4000' 5000' 18cc 197 178 171 170 165 145 19cc 183 167 160 158 152 137 20cc 169 156 149 146 140 129 21cc 156 145 138 134 128 121 stock 130 125 118 112 106 100 Quote
bansheesrtoys Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 (edited) i had a ticking to on the left side, does it go away when you rev the motor. if so my prob was the left head pipe had a weak sping and the exhasut was making a ticking sound. u can aslo try to hold pressure on the pipe when still cold and see if it stops. i held mine where the pipe meets the silcer and the noise went away. wotrh a try if you still have it togher. Josh Z Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Sea Level 1000' 2000' 3000' 4000' 5000' 18cc 197 178 171 170 165 145 19cc 183 167 160 158 152 137 20cc 169 156 149 146 140 129 21cc 156 145 138 134 128 121 stock 130 125 118 112 106 100 This is cool so I have 18 cc domes with porting, and about a -2mm deck height and am at 5000' and i currently am pushing 160psi. so that would put me at 200+ at sea level? interesting.... Thanks. Quote
