hey im thinking of buying a set of dmc 916 and the woman told me there are holes drilled in the pipes for EGT probes and i have no idea what they are just wondering if somebody could explain what they are to me and what they do.

do they really serve any real purpose i could just weld the holes back up couldnt i?

should have caps on them, if not you can get caps. they are threaded. egt monitors are for tuning stoich/AFR's and are very critical for proper tuning when ever hp counts. are they necessary on a play bike...? no not really.

cool thanks for the info and i forgot to metion the woman has the probes and gauges for them so since them come with the pipes i think i might just put them on..

Well thats a big plus. Now you can keep an eye on your jetting.

Just to clarify egt (exhaust gas temperature) is not afr. Afr (air fuel ratio) commonly measured by stoich would have to be read by an 02 sensor or a oxygen sensor. A wideband sensor and gauge would be needed to read stoich on a 2 stroke. That is the same type of setup that we use on the dyno to tune. EGT will measure the exhaust gas temps but is not a tuning device. We however do use the egt gauges on alot of our bikes but simply as a reference. We still tune the bikes like we always have by feel, plug readings, et's, and dyno testing. Then we get a good temperature that the bike performs the best at then it is easy to get back to there due to elevation changes, temp changes, or even fuel variances. EGT can also be used to sync jetting side to side and be used as a safety net in case one side leans out for what ever reason.

True, but if your EGT hits 1300+ ,your melting aluminum. So they are good for preventing a burn down. Also they work great at seeing differences in your cylinders. You'll know if a cylinders not firing, can see differences between carbs, you can see when reeds go bad, air leaks, blown O-ring, and they work with race gas (unlike the short life of an O2 sensor) so you can ride with them for years. They aren't as perfect as an O2 sensor for jetting, but they can save you from a burn down if your jetting gets too far off. If they are included with the pipes....I think it's a bonus.
