stacman450 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 bought some vf3's of member here. dont know if they came with all needed to install. couple questions, 1- they came with an aluminum piece but once in were i think it would go the carb side is not flat, does it need this part and if so where does it go. 2- do i need special carb boots or gaskets? put the gasket on the intake part of cylinders and used another gasket where i had a leak around the back side of reed cages, still leaked is this a normal problem with these and/or what do i need to do. brand new top end and no leaks there, only around reed cages.. any help appreciated.. jbooker82 Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Did you cut your factory intake boots? You need to cut the rubber flaps off the back of the factory carb boots. I think I know what pice your talking about. Cascade Innovations sells a square metal pice that keeps the reed cage together. They call it a reed retainer. The Vforce 3's come with a plastic pice that snaps in to the reed cage. It looks similar to the flaps you cut off the back of the carb boot. If you take that pice out then the reeds wont stay put. So cascade has some square metal pices that go in its place. Most guys run the plastic pices if they have an intake that has a round hole (like the stock carb boots) or other billit intake. I run the metal reed retainers because I have a boss racing intake and it has a large squre opening on the back side. http://67.199.65.66/cascade_innovations/newlook/store/store_View.cfm?STORE_AREA_ID=13&store_dept_id=83 Boss Intake Quote

Sounds like you have that reed deal that cascade makes. IMO I'd try to put the stock reed stuffers that was sent with the V-force cages with your stock manifolds if that's what you already have. back in if you got them and remove that spacer thing Here's what cascade sales and might be what you have. At least you can see the pic how they go if you don't have the original stuffers from V-force. http://67.199.65.66/cascade_innovations/newlook/store/store_View.cfm?STORE_AREA_ID=13&store_dept_id=83 Hope the info helps Quote
bigblockbanshee Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 He's running the factory 26mm intakes with the "guides" or "fins" cut off of them at the back. What's happening is the boots only press against the plastic insert themselves. The leakage we're experiencing is coming from around the outside of the plastic piece where it snaps in and there's nothing there to seal it apparently. That's why we were wondering if there was a special gasket that needed to be used or what the deal was. As you can tell we've never used these before, hence the newb questions... Quote
stacman450 Posted December 22, 2010 Author Report Posted December 22, 2010 so from the pics it looks like there are two ways to use these things.. one with metal insert and the other with out.. im i wrong?? like bigblock said.. never used these so kinda in a funk.. plus its a brand new top end and i want it to be air tight... thanks for all the help so far.. stacman450 Posted December 22, 2010 Author Report Posted December 22, 2010 should i get the vf2 gaskets, to seal ??? seems like that s all i need to do. Quote
jbooker82 Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I just put a gasket between the cylinder and reed, and then a gasket between the reed and intake. I have not had a problem. You can use a tiny bit of yamabond to help seal it. Quote
stacman450 Posted December 22, 2010 Author Report Posted December 22, 2010 yeah thats what ill prob do, ive got gaskets, ill just put some sealer in there... also should i use the stuffers or the metal reed retainer version.. stock cylinders, ported mx/hardcore by HJR. pro circuits, stock airbox .. milled head... just want more power but still reliable...thanks Quote
jbooker82 Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 I would probably use the plastic reed stuffers. Just port match them to the intake. Quote
bigblockbanshee Posted December 23, 2010 Report Posted December 23, 2010 So we've ended up putting the stock cages back in to do the leakdown test. We made gaskets to put between the boots and the cage flange and they still leaked terribly. Has anyone had any problems with the VF3 flanges warping and not sealing? You can actually see how bad they're warped without putting a straightedge and feeler gauge on them. Personally I think they've either been ran on a motor that's been melted down or they've been torqued down way too much. Anyone? Quote

I cut the rubber tabs off of the old intake like it said and put them on. It ran beautifully after I put the choke tube back on. Oops. I never had a bit of trouble with leaks. Quote
