Advice for sand/ dirt drags

Well since Wilborn's has been shut down in Cullman, AL I'm just left with a couple places to ride that really aren't that fun to ride on a banshee. Not to mention that I have no one to trail ride with so the fun factor isn't there. I thought about setting up for asphalt but I went to the local track that runs a motorcycle class and only 10 were running. I don't feel like the money invested would be worth it. I'm thinking about racing at a local track, Outlaw Sand Drags. I haven't been yet but I believe they run a test n tune with a ET / bracket class afterwards. My banshee is bone stock right down to the tires. I'm a pretty good bracket racer in cars. What would yall suggest doing as far as setting up for running a dirt / sand drag? I'm not so much worried about speed at this point. Any tips yall can think of would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, I'm on a very limited budget too probably $500 maybe a little more.

welcome to the site man. not too many alabama boys around here. good to see another one.

Thanks, I've noticed there isn't many of us on here. I think I saw a post where you were talking about some dunes. Are there some in AL that I'm not aware of?

That doesn't look like too bad of a place to me.... too bad it is so far away. I live in Morgan Co. south of Decatur. Man I figured i would have gotten some suggestions by now. I guess not many people check the drag forum or they are all out racing. :) It rained here most of the day.

I have lots of family in athens or limestone county.I was hoping to find a place down there to race.If you set it up to race sand its almost the same for asphalt.Extended and low is the name of the game.If you can pull the same number everytime you will win.Does not matter how big or little the motor is that you have.

Yeah low was kinda what I was thinking, but I was hoping I would be able to get away without putting an extended swingarm on it. I know the stock tires are probably not going to hook good. I was thinking about trying the pro wedges. They are having a big race this weekend, I'm going to check it out and talk to them to see how things go each week. I'm not going to do this if they only have 5 or 6 running each week. By the way, they are streaming the race on ustream, just type in outlaw sand drags.

First off, my friends that race at outlaw love the place, hope to make it down there one day myself.

My advice is get tires like pro wedges that hook and work on your gearing.

You've got a stock motor...you'll probably be more consistent on that than anything else if you get off the line good and hit your shifts.

Banshees are notorious for being poor at shifting, when you start putting the power to them, (pipes, porting, etc.) it's when they really start to show their weakness.

My only advice is once you do start to mod it do it as a package and not by piecemail if you can afford to.

I know that's easier to say than do....especially with how tight $$ is now a days.

But if you do things out of order or not as a package, it's easy to go backwards (Slower) and get frustrated for not seeing results in ETs.

Good luck...our hometown track is for sale and not operating. It was a sand track we used to go to and burn off 20 to 30 passes no sweat...we ran out of fuel before we ran out of time. It's a damn shame....

Thanks for the advice. The tires was my biggest question b/c I didn't want to get something that was totally wrong. I'm going to go watch the index and bracket race on Friday of the outlaw open. I wish I could make it to the heads up stuff on Saturday but work and prior arrangements are going to prevent me from doing that. I'm not looking to get in too deep as far as mods right now, just looking to have some fun until I graduate college. If I do anything it might be pipes. Thanks again!

i wouldent add any mods, id get the right tires and spend my time getting use to dragin, car to quads is a big diff. id get really good at getting shifts and rev points perfect and treeing right just like cars, then think about mods.lol. thats what i do and it works

Yeah mods are probably not going to happen this year with my money situation. I forgot just how bad it was to be a broke college student :( I have gotten some struts made for it out of 1 inch tubing but I haven't put them on yet. I hope to make my first race in a couple of weeks.

If it's bracket racing I would do a override(duneable n-down 1-5). One reason, consistency. Think of it As an automatic in a car. Never miss a shift. Most of the quickest drag vehicles run an auto :)

I thought about the override, but it isn't in the budget, even more so now. Thanks for the advice though

Man I wish I was. I've run into a few snags money wise and other things also. I committed to helping someone on a few Saturdays, it has rained, etc. I was ready to go last Saturday and I called b/c the owner had told me to call before. Well it turns out that they have decided to start running on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month now. The attendance has been way down this year from what they had told me. I remember everbody telling me about this place back in 06 or 07 and they said they would run til about 1 or 2 in the morning. I guess the economy has caught up with them or something. When I went and watched back in June there were only about 12 running test and tune and only 5 got in the bracket race. It still looked fun though. So if everything goes as plannned I should be running on the 14th this month.
