I'm taking a computer manufacturing class in college, where we learn to make computer programs for CNC machines. For my final project I want to make a set of billet bowls. I'm looking for an idea of how to make a set that are better than the ones on the current market. If anyone has any good ideas on how to improve the design or info of things I need to keep in consideration, please share.

 

The only thing I have in mind is an overflow tube.

Drain plug, dual vents / overflows, big main sump, anti-slosh baffle, and clearance for clutch lever.

 

I can do a bigger drain bolt to change the pilot jet, clearence for the clutch lever and bigger main sump for the main for the jet to sit in.

 

The anti-slosh baffle is something I was thinking about, but still not sure how to do something like that with the limited room and the flots hanging in the way. I keep thinking some kinda of screen might work or act as a baffle.

 

Was also thinking of making for reed spacers with a built in Nos hook up kinda like the plates they make for cars.

Any more ideas?

first question that should be asked is do you guys have the machine capacity to take on this project? What axis CNC are you using? What program are you using? MasterCam? Whos building the fixtures and locating the part? Its a very involved process good luck there is still a job market of this kind of education.

Don't forget to put some kind of float stop in them so the needle/seat doesn't get stuck wide open. Big factor on billet bowls for people who dune/hill race. I like the other ideas to...good luck lol.

Yes we have machines capable to make the bowls. We have 3, 4 and a 5 axis machines but I don’t see any reason that you would need more than a 3 axis.

We use Feature CAM. I also do some part time work at another machine shop that uses Master Cam. If for some reason that Feature Cam cannot pull it off. I can do it all on Master Cam. I have built the program more than 5 times now and don’t see any problems.

 

I will be building the fixture to hold the parts myself. I will drill the holes for the main jet first then use that to bolt it down... Making a 2 pic bowl

 

Not sure what you mean by locating the part? Are your talking about honing the axis?

Your first response I felt that you didn't understand the complexity behind it. Sounds like you thought about it more than I thought. Locating the part and fixture so that the program can accurately communicate to the CNC where the 0,0's are etc.

 

Good luck post up some pics of the fixtures I'd like to take a look. What kind of production volume are we talking about?
