Dipstick level?

So I've heard two different stories about reading the level on the dipstick...... One says to screw the dipstick in then take it back out and read it...the other says just set the stick in then pull back out and read it...??? Which is the correct way please? Sorry for the n00b question

Unscrew it, wipe clean. Put in pull out, check! 1.5 L oil change. 1.7 L bone dry.

Both owners manuals that came with the 89 and the 96 Banshees that I bought new say to remove the dipstick, wipe it off, set it on top of the threads and then take it out and read the level.

i dont screw it in either just dip the stick and check.
