Hi, well this question is because i notice that after each sunday on the dunes my filters get many sand on them....so i try to clean them and oil them after each dune day....as you may know the oil and cleaner from K&N is not really cheap and also i may reduce the life of the filters due to the frequently cleaning...so i was thinking about buying some outerwears.....my question is...do i will still need to oil them? or maybe only apply a light layer of oil? by the way what other kind of cleaner can i use on my filters? thanks!

They still need to be oiled, it should be a very light amount of oil. If oil is dripping moff the filter then you have over oiled it. I prefer to use the K&N oil that comes in a squeeze bottle, then you just barely get oil on the top of each pleat of the filter and let it soak down, if there are any white spots after it sits for about an hour go back and touch them up. The filter should be a pink color when it is properly oiled, not red. Every time I use the oil in the spray can, I end up with to much oil on the filter. I run an outerwear on mine always and I only clean my filter once or twice a season, and even then they are not that dirty. Also, there should not be any oil soaking into the outerwear.

I'm guessing your running pods.

I used to run a pod on a Blaster I had way back when, and the outerwear made a BIG difference. I dont think theyneed to be oiled, I never oiled the one I had. It's like a mini air-box around each filter, and I thought they were great when I had my Blaster. They kept a ton of shit out, and you can just pull them off and rinse them off after your done riding, they didnt seem to affect the performance too much either. For the price I don't think you can go wrong.

As far as the cleaner, I don;t know of any other cleaner that works with K&N stuff, but someone else might.

With either pods or pro-flow set up, It is a good idea to run outerwares on your K&N's especially in sandy or silty conditions. You DO still have to oil the filters, but DO NOT oil the outerwares.

X2

All K&N filters need to ALWAYS be oiled at all times, the oil is what stops the fine particle from getting through. NEVER oil the Outerwear, it will turn it into a big dirt collector, the idea of the outer wear is the large particles are supposed to be stopped by it and then fall away.

Definately run the the outerwears. Bad idea to run open air filters like that. I just give my K&N's a light pink spray, try to be care and cover all areas without overspraying. And If I do I wipe em down with rag. Also use a bit of carb cleaner to clean the mount part where it connects to the carb. Keeps it from slipping off.
