87sheerips Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 Ok, so I was putting everything back together after rebuilding my water pump, etc.. I got the clutch cover tightened, and the kicker would NOT engage at all. After a lil jiggling, i finally got it to grab. WTF! Everything is installed properly (spring is in that case relief, stopper in the right spot), but the gear does not want to engage all the time. On my last trip, I noticed that it did not engage on one occasion. I thought nothing of it cuz it didn't happen again the rest of the day. Im thinking my return spring has lost tension, and I need to replace it. I have never heard of this, so I am here asking who has seen it. Any info appreciated here, thanks! Why cant anything be easy? lol Quote

Why cant anything be easy? lol I would pull the CC back off and investigate, see if the kicker gear is engaging fully. If the spring was wore to where its not engaging it, it would seem that it wouldn't engage at all. Did you take the kicker gear completely off when you did other work? Quote
87sheerips Posted October 2, 2009 Author Report Posted October 2, 2009 Everything looks in its place, and fine. I have the cover off now. I dunno man, Ive never seen this before. Its just not letting the gear slide back on the "worm spline" shaft when you go to kick it over. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Quote
T_Shee Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 i had a similar situation once after having one apart. i ended up using a thin washer as a shim to go between the cover and the plastic piece. dunno if this helps you tho Quote

I was holding the plastic piece last night and wondering the same thing! Cuz that spring wants to back out of its slot, and seems you need to have pressure on that plastic piece or else it wont engage. Ill try it! Quote
Duneman101 Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 i fought mine for the first couple months of the season, i never figured out what was wrong with it, i got a used one off ebay for $10, compared them couldn't see any differences, the spring tension was the same everything looked exaclty the same, put the new one on and haven't had any issues since.... Usually if the kicker does not work upon reinstallation, it is due to the assembly procedure. Remember there are two spring ends that have to be in the right place. The Torsion spring should need preloaded when installed or it will not return the kicker properly. Also make sure that plastic thing is in the right home and the groove in it goes around that spring end. There are expanded views of the kicker all over the net. They can be a pain but I doubt you have lost spring tension. Probably just something a little out of it's proper position. B Quote

I just saw in the clymers that that spring is supposed to hold 2lbs of tension, and it got me thinking.. Probly overthinking lol After i removed mine a couple of time i put it back in and when i was kicking it it would kick free until finally sometime it grab, i looked at it and where the spring is around the gear seem loose so i remove it from the gear and put it into a vise so it could be a little bit more tight on the gear and put it back in and everything is alright since then, hope that help Quote
