Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the stock timing plate on my 89 shee is adjustable to an extent. I want to go to +4 but I was wondering if this can be simply adjusted with my stock plate or do I need an aftermarket plate or a timing key? Why would you use a +4 key if it can be done by adjusting your stock timing plate? Advantages, disadvantages? Will going to +4 give me a noticable difference lower end? It is a mostly stock 89 with only Pro Circuit Platinums and 13t 42t sprockets.

stock timing plates are not adjustable.

 

timing keys can shear off causing more problems than they are worth.

 

aftermarket timing plates are cheap and effective.

 

at this stage of your mods, i doubt you will notice much difference with the increase in timing.

 

any of the site sponsors should be able to hook you up with one.

with some work you can make a stock plate go up to about 4 1/2 or buy a ricky stator for 45 that goes up to ten. Easy choice
