Were talking about the flat part of the plug that the strap is welded to....Your supose to get a solid light color change all the way around that ring....I was only getting a light color change about a 1/4 the way around....The bike did seem lazy a bit at WOT...I went from a 160 to a 172 main jet to see when I would get it to missfire/fourstroke and with that 172 main it acutally ran much stonger. It did sputter just a tad at about 5k rpms but once the power valves opened it pulled clean....Ill put some 170 mains in next and see if that sputter cleans up at WOT...Then ill do a plug chop...the 160 mains were reccommend from trinty....Seemed too lean for sure... Now the plugs have a full color change on the flat and the ground strap heat mark is no longer showing hot! Its right where it should be in the center of the strap! I was using 93 ocatane and was getting some detonation at WOT at about 6-7K rpms....I put in 110 race gas and the detonation was gone....But now im thinking that the main jet being so lean was causing the detonation. Im gonna try pump gas again and see if the detonation is gone...

Does one jet size say from 172 to 170 really make a big change at WOT??

Thats a great picture....That way you can see the whole ring ;)

LT1bird, WHAT fucking octane fuel are you running? Thought I would throw this out there, you cant read plugs if you run race fuel. The fuel washes down the plug, you have to go off feel of the bike and how its running.

I have said this a million times, and I will say it again. You guys who post in these threads need to get all your information before you start giving answers out to people on how to fix something.

Im running 110 now but would love to mix 1/2 and 1/2.... Funny, ive never seen that anyplace written about race fuel not being able to read the plug chop.... Sorry if I somehow offended you  Everyone keeps saying DO A PLUG CHOP...... Im ready to do it and your saying the 110 race fule will not color the plug properly? So I should just tune by the seat of my pants.....No problem if thats the case..... Thanks!

You have to go off feel, the plug wont tell you anything unless it is way off on jetting.

So am I interpreting this to say that with race fuel you won't get plug coloration? Or are you simply saying you won't get the quick ring on a set of new plugs?

Both, the Tolulene in the fuel washes down the plug. Its not an accurate reading. Usually if your really rich you can finally get color off the plug. My bike was running so rich that it was cutting out on the top end last ride, I pulled the plug to show my cousin and it was white with a smidge of brown on one side. He couldn't believe it. Jetted down, and it ran great, but the Plug looks white. Plug chops are a waste of time, you have to get your base jetting close and go off of feel.

that's kind of wierd, because i was experiencing something similar with our 90 octane up here( it's the same fuel as 93 pump, but without ethanol) i got a ghost ring on the plug run, and every time i pulled the plugs, i could see the color being washed off, untill about 2 hrs mx ridding, stopping every once in a while for adjustments/ chain toss, etc. it makes me wonder what exactly puts the color there, because it's always worked on 4 stroke and snow-go's years ago, so i can only suspect the oil, or lack of etanol stopping the color in my case

ok dealing with the same deal my plugs after doing a plug chop are like brand new with 114 race gas. the base of the threads have dark to black ring on it, but according to you just ride it.

it feels rich when i grab 5th gear it kinda bogs so i know its rich.

basically to get it very accurate i would have to put it on a dyno cause its like pissing up a rope with race gas im i correct??
