hi guys,

i was riding yesterday when my engine seemed to loose power. now the right pipe seems to smoke more than the left, but both carbs are sucking air in, both pipes are also spiting oil, could you please let me know what you think the problem is?

at some rev ranges the engine works properly and at some there is no power at all and in neutral the engine is wokring unevenly.

thanx

Its a 2005 bike... just came back from being serviced by Yamaha dealer (who is terrible). It has K&N filters and a cool head. By losses power i mean it kind of slurs at low revs... then suddenly pics up power almost like normal once coming onto the power band but then the power starts to fade and i cant get near max revs...

Spark plugs look 'normal' for a 2 stroke ... and they are new so i dont think the problem lays in the plugs themselves. i took them out cleaned them and still no help. this has led me to believe its can be the ignition coils or the cables???

anyway i am going to check the compression of both cylinders... (i dont think this is the problem but worth a check). if the compression in both cylinders is good im going to go after the carbs and then the coils and cables?

what do you guys think?

Any help welcome... thanks!

my banshee did the same thing... it would run but it had no balls.. turns out a piece of one of the reeds broke off in the cylinder. the piece got stuck in the other set of reeds so i got it out but i put new reeds in it and it ran like a champ.

i agree, it sounds like a broken reed. i'd do a good carb cleaning while you have them off to check the reeds though too.

ok guys heres what we did:

the compression is fine in both cylinders, reeds fine and both spark plugs seem to be fine and have a spark BUT:

we took off the carbs cleaned them, put them back on and the problem persisted: the right cylinder was firing while the left was not. we then swapped the carbs around : left carb to right cylinder and right carb to left cylinder. Now when we started the engine the left cylinder started running while the right run for a few secs and died! we thought it must be the carb! so when we put the carbs back in the original places we expacted the right cylinder to work and left one to die BUT no such luck. now the left runs and the right doesnt!!!

suggestions?

thanks!!!

I do not think the carbs are interchangeable but now that you've got them in their respective locations you may try to swap the plug wires to opposite cylinders and see if that does anything.

it took a few small changes to make the bike run when we swapped the carbs round but it worked...

and we swapped the wires round. put new plugs etc etc and nothing.

this is one big mystery!
