I traded my 400 ex on a banshee yesterday. Ran fine there and everything seemed okay. We went riding after we got home and when we were riding up a hill it started making a loud rattling noise so I stopped and shut her off. One of the wires came off the plug because the cap was stripped. I switched it out for my spare plug and started it up but it is still rapping on the same side as the wire that came off. It's hard to kick now, won't stay running doesn't die, just completely stops. Could it be a piston?

Sounds like you mighta broke a piston?

I'd say check you're compression first and go from there.

Definately don't start it again until you tear it down and give it a look. Could be anything from a circlip coming out on you to loosing a crank bearing.....If you are hearing a nasty internal noise, you are going to have to tear into it...

Are you sure it is coming from the front end of the motor?

have you talked to the people you bought it from? I'd talk to them before you do ANYTHING....

That kinda sounds like the same thing i went through. I bought my first banshee a couple of months ago. Brought it home and was just going up and down my road. Decided to open it up! It made a horrible noise like you said and then died. Got it home and pulled the jugs. My right piston had shattered and pieces jammed my crank from moving. May not be the same thing in your case but wont hurt to check your pistons.

Denitately top end. We tore it down. A bearing came out and destroyed my piston.

There really is not a bearing that can "come out" in the topend. Can you be more specific. Was the engine supposedly fresh?

I did talk to the guy. His reply was pretty much sorry for your luck, it was rebuilt over the winter, with around 15 hours on the rebuild, so it's not my fault. We took it to the shop, and just told them to fix it. I guess he took the 400 to be rebuilt even though everything was just put in it over the winter. Once he found out how much more expensive it was than the banshee he just decided to sell it.

yes. there's nothing in the top end that can 'come out'. if you tore it down, take some pictures of the piston (tops at least), the head and such and let us see. if the cylinders are off now, take some pics of them and then down in the lower end.

it is possible for the bearing to fall out but only in pieces. i lost the upper rod bearing in my bike after the second tank on a fresh rebuild. shredded everything on that side. this time went with wiseco instead of the cheap shit.

The indication was that something simply slid out. Not sure what happened but sounds like it is as the shop now. New crank, pistons, and bore will probably get it going again.

Well, pretty much whoever rebuilt it, had no clue what they were really doing. It was supposedly bored .060 over. It was only .040 over. The stock pistons were also put back in after boring it. Can't be to angry though. I only paid $1500 for the ex, so after the rebuild it will be like paying $2500 for the banshee.

Top ends are cheap. If the piston got destroyed, you might need to split the cases and clean all the debris(sp?) out. And while you are in there, replace all seals, bearings etc. Make it like new.

The piston wasn't completely destroyed but we are getting it bored out again, wiseco pistons, rings, and it needs a new crank. It just sucks having to wait for it.
