05.Banshee.SE Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Alright...the nut on one of my case studs, that holds the jug on is totally destroyed... It wouldn't budge, so I let it soak overnight with 3 in 1 oil, WD40, Seize Off, you name it... and it wouldn't budge. Then, it stripped... So I tried to grind it off... And you can only cut so far before it cuts into the jugs... And thus far it's partially cut, and from melting has fused into one piece... Also, the only way to get to it is to remove the other jug, so clearance is an issue, as is metal shavings (and etc.) entering the open case (I blocked it off the best I could, but any really crazy machinery isn't going to fit here)... This is the last nut/stud keeping me from sending my jugs out for my rebuild...and it's not letting me... What else can I do? Quote
LS1Inferno Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Use a cold Chisel. yep chisel and medium hammer. Quote
2001Stroker Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 I was thinking the same thing as I was reading it. Looks like I was beat to it. Or, if you have a Dremel, you could put a cut-off wheel on that. Quote
278 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Yeah I was going to say dremel, but for future reference let it soak with WD40 then take a torch and heat it up really good then try and get it off while its cooling it may take a few tries Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 I would use my air hammer in this case. But chisel and hammer would work fine. You should have used PB Blaster. I swear by that stuff. I have also heard of people using coke because the acid eats the corrosion. Good luck. Quote
banshee_terror_ Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) not everybody has a chiesel. i dont so i would just use a dremel. and oce you get it off. take a pare of vise grips and get the stud out Edited March 9, 2009 by banshee_terror_ Quote
sleeper06 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 You need to just cut it off get the jug off and deal with it,chances are if your having that much trouble with the nut the stud will be twice as hard, rusted, frozen.Find someone with a good mig or tig welder, weld another bolt or nut onto stud, the heat and frequency of the welder breaks up the rust and the heat will allow you to back it out easily. This is done on just about every watercraft with a problem works great and takes no time/effert.I have done it too banshee cases after my friend snapped three studs taking his shit apart Sorry got off topic,Die grinder with a porting tool will fit rite in and take the nut rite off Quote
05.Banshee.SE Posted March 10, 2009 Author Report Posted March 10, 2009 I'll try the hammer and chisel next....then the welder. I let it soak 24 hours with every lubricant I had, and it was no good. I'll also look for a smaller grinder...the diameter on this disk is just to extreme (4" roughly.) I'll find a 1-2". Yeah, I'm a little worried about getting the studs out now...I'm just going to replace all of them...what's the best method for these? I don't like the vices because they ruin the threads, then slip right off. I've had more success with a monkey wrench. They definately have some corroison to them from the coolant...I don't do any water riding, nor am I in freezing temps (FL)... Quote
spurdy Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 not everybody has a chiesel. i dont so i would just use a dremel. and oce you get it off. take a pare of vise grips and get the stud out If you don't have a chisel and you have a dremel, hmmm, I think there is something wrong. A hammer and chisel are the basic of tools. JMHO. You could always just bite on the nut with vise grips and twist until you twist the stud in two. The next problem is going to be getting the stud out of the case. Granted, it will be easier to get a bite on it with the jug off but it will still be stuck in the case. Good luck! SP Quote
J-Madd Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 To remove the other studs, just jam 2 nuts on there, with the flanges together (if you use flange nuts). Then use a wrench and they'll screw right out. But, I wouldn't replace the other studs if they're ok. jmo. Quote
