I am sick of not being able to ride when the ground snow on it and is frozen so I am taking an old set of bald tires and putting studs in them. For the studs I am using 5/16"x1" carriage bolts with washers on both sides of the tire and a double nut. I have a V pattern laid out (7 in a V) and a total of 8 V's I could run another 8 V's but wanted to see what it does first.

 

I am going to be putting a tube inside the tire so it doesn't leak.

 

I've hear about people using snowmobile studs and was wondering if anyone here has done anything like this before?

When the grounds frozen the studs wont hook either unless you use a grinder & sharpen them youll have to get Ice Picks if your gonna ride in snow get you some 4snows or pro wedge 2's & put some anti freize in them to give you some more weight to hook studing a set of tires with frozen ground would just about be a waste of time with steel studs we stud our ties to drag race with but now for riding on frozen ground

i have my set done with 1 and a quarter inch carbides from sleds. around 100 in the rear and 144 in front. didnt need that many but had them around so i used them. those are the best to use. the bolt will wear down way too fast for the work it takes. tried it. i lined them with some extra rubber to prevent any wear that would puncture the tube. they say keep it filled with about 10 psi to keep the tire from spinning on the rim and ripping out the valve stem. ive ran these for the past 2 years with no problem. i can ride wheelies on the ice with no problem and some of the slede heads are shocked when i pull past them. but for sure use some carbides. it takes some time to do this so do it right. also they work alot better on the ice. just in snow coverd ground is so so.

I just got done installing the tires and they hook up great. Wheelying isn't a problem either. I tested them in a parking lot where it is all really hard pack snow and solid ice. I didn't have any problems with the tires hooking up on ice and it actually dug some pretty good trenches. I'll try to get pics sometime.

why not lets see some pics. also your really not running alot of studs. theres peaple on this site who ride frozen lakes and stuff and have 500 studs in there tires. never scene what they look like but want to. but yah carbides are the way to go.

you need these gold ice racing screws i have about 700 in each tire and its better traction than dry pavement. you have to stay on the ice or they'll dull up quickly but not as quickly as sheet metel screws. Peter Local are you coming riding this sunday you sally :tongue: i'll get you studs and you can pay me on sunday we'll put them on when we get there i'll bring my screw gun you can take them out in the spring if you don't have extra rubber i did it with my razor 2 thy'll be fine. lets do it lets go!!. $56 for 1,000

this is what a competitive Ice racing tire looks like, there is 480 some screw in each rear. do not forget about the front! you nee equally good traction out front if you want to be able to turn anywhere.

heres what i run. about 400 ice screws here.this is just a pattern i came up with for running on the lake. snowmobile studs are supposed to hook up really well for straight line drags where theres no turning involved. gonna try a set next year.bansheepics001.jpg

heres the set up i run. carbide will last a hell of alot longer than those bolts. also on the ice having nothing in the front will give you hell trying to turn. i would recomend this if you plan on ice riding alot in the future. good job though.

nice those are real sweet mine are 22 inch tires you've got the best setup in my opinion you even put them in the front of the lug in the corner!

so far they have been great everywhere ive rode. i stick to everything i take on. the only downfall is you cant take any quick uturns to turn around but tracks are one way anyways so doesnt happen too often. takes a hell of alot to lose traction.
