my buddie has a 2001 raptor he got for cheap not running and we tried to time it up but when we put it at tdc on the side of the motor the piston is at the bottom . is that right? and we timed it up with the mark on tdc and it is blowing gas out thee carbs into the airbox

and we checked the magneto and it is on the keyway so how is the piston on the bottom at tdc? any help would be greatly appreiciated

the way the book describes to time it is way wrong... I tried getting the timing set on an 01 my roomie had. i followed the directions the manual had listed but when we went to start it the piston slapped a valve and fucked it all up...I'd take that thing to the stealership and get it done...after i tried 4 times i said screw it. The stealership i took it to had 4 technicians and 2 weeks before they got it right...that's why i'll stick to 2 strokes.

ok so you need to get it to the top dead center mark and the piston needs to be at the top, take the plug out put something in the spark plug hole like a straw, and there should be a plug in the side of the case that you can take out, take that out put a socket on it, then turn it until the straw gets to the highest point that is top dead center, if you need to adjust valves do it while it is a tdc, rocker arm will be at the lowest point of the camshaft, because this is your compression stroke, tdc is always set on the compression stroke, then after you have everything set put your socket back on the that nut on the crank and slowly crank it by hand, this will let you see if the valves will hit the piston, i hope this helps

if i was there i could have it done in like 5 min, these four stroke quads are so dam easy

i have rebuilt many 4strokes in my day and i have never seen the mark on the side case say that it is on tdc but the piston is at the bottom the onley thing i could think of is that the stator was on 180* off or the keyway lock wasn't in but he checked it and said it was fine
