Ieat4strokes Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 im looking to build a badass trail bike with good low end grunt and midrange..... i was gonna go 4 mill with some T'6s or some cpi inframes and a port job for a 4 mill will stock carbs be enough?......local guy said just drag port it and itll still be good for trails as long as im agressive with it, which i am, i ride hard no doubt but i dont want the bottom end to b useless...... what are some of the setups u guys reccomend for trails, long sloping hills and some dragging.... because all of us know theres gonna b a race sooner or later, and with the crowd i ride with, probally sonner than later so i wanna be able to keep up. i was wanting to go with 18 inch tires because i love the look, but i didnt wanna spin toooooo much. one guy said 18's and 1 up in thr front sprocket will put me where i want, that itll ride like its on 20's..... what size tires u reccomend for my app...... thanks alot.... sheerider1026 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 your local guy is full of shit.. drag port it and you will hate trail riding it.. trust me.... if you have the money, go with a 4 mill longrod setup with a good woods port to match the 4 mill crank, a 2 into 1 carb, and maybe a set of toomey t5's or pro circuits.. cpi's are more of a drag pipe.. get a timing plate, and a cool head to raise the compression.. talk with a builder and they can put together one kickass combo for you.. F.A.S.T racing, passion racing, or HERR JUGGS RACING... those are some reputable builders Quote
jbooker82 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 If I was going to do a awesome trail machine I would do the 4 mill. It helps ad midrange torqe due to the extra stroke. I would do a hot trail port and ethire keep the stock carbs or go with dual PWK 28's. A 2:1 kills the top end. For exhaust I would talk to the guy doing the port job. He will know what works best with his port jobs. T5's would be a mid to top end pipe, CPI's are a top end pipe, and Paul Turner Mids are a great low end pipe. I woudlnt let your local guy do the port job by the what you said he says. Quote
Ieat4strokes Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 ok my apologies for not being so clear, local guy im referring too is just a rider, however has one of the fastest bikes in my area so i was talking to him about setups..... hes running t6s with a drag ported 4 mill...... i told him i want something with kick ass top end but still be trailable.....i do like trails, creeks the whole nine. now everyone around here basically uses the same guy for porting Jeff @ maximum cycle and ive yet to talk to him about what im exactly gonna do...... was just fishing for info from here so i wouldnt sound clueless.....everyone says hes real good and can basically do whatever i want. Your local guy with the t6's on a ported 4 mill is a fool. He is probably fast when he drag races people, but the bike is probably a handful when it comes to doing anything else. There are several low-end pipe and port work threads on here. You just have to poke around and you will find them. I ride a low-mid setup in the sand, and I like it a lot. It does fairly well everywhere. Quote
AKheathen Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 not trying to bash the guy, but he's just trying to sell you on what he's got. ride his bike, and don't pay attention to how much power it's got, but what kind of power it's got. do your pokin around, and what ever you go with will have more power, but you have to match your setup for what kind of power you'll be happy with when you ride, without a mix-match. for example, don't buy low-mid pipes, dune port, and v-force 3 reeds. when you're done, you wouldn't realize how much the mods rob the strong points of eachother. i got some older fmf gold series, and i'm enjoying a nice long flat torque curve that hits in the low end. it got me the long gear i was looking for. nice on hillshots too  Quote
Ieat4strokes Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 ur right! i do need to search around and browse but im on a cell phone, no internet where i live as of yet, just gotta house in the country and they said itll be april before i get net there so bare with me lol...... yea the guy is fast in a straight line....can actually hang with us in the trails to but he rides his ass off, has to i guess to keep the rpms up in his powerband. heres what i have, what im in the process of doing and where i wanna go..... i have fmf phattys power core 2s.....@ sea level with 260 mains with a uni filter and airbox....13-41 gearing. im going to 300 mains and removing lid, chariot advance on the way and ordering a noss head with 21cc domes tomorrow.. what else am i missing? i am going to port but ima wait on some cylinders and a 4mill...... just rebuilt and stockers are on last bore.... mofoka Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 for the trails I ride, I like riding on 22s. Gives extra clearance for the axle. Even with bolt on's I'm ahead of the pack. Ask your buddy who did the porting. cause one man's drag port could be another's clean up... Quote
pitkendall Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 unless u are riding on gravel or dirt roads i wouldnt run 18s any kinda ruff trail or deep rut or even worse big mud hole is gonna kill ya fun time. its not very fun always haven to yank the rearend off a big rut or outta deep mudhole i run 20s but sometimes wish i ran 22s becouse the utility atvs around here have killed the trails hope this helps Quote
brugal Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Your local guy with the t6's on a ported 4 mill is a fool. Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Quote
AKheathen Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 oh yah, i'm runnin 22/12/9's @ 1psi, and they pretty much stay on top of everything, but my gearing is 14/40, which makes it hard to creep sometimes, but i like it just fine Quote
Ieat4strokes Posted January 14, 2009 Author Report Posted January 14, 2009 thanks for all the replies, there are some real knowledgable guys on here and i know u get bored anwsering the same questions when a new guy joins.....when i finally get high speed internet routed to my house ill be more search button friendly ...... i figured 18's would be too small, but most of the riding i do is on long hilly wooded areas and its not badly rutted out.... plus its just like gearing it down and should give me more bottom end right? i do like to climb hills alot, but if not ill probally run some 20x10x9's, i have 20x11's on there now and i really just want a lower profile tire instead of the balloon turf tamer look hahahh...... i ordered a cool head with 21cc domes today and the advance came in, just waiting on flywheel puller.... what a bitch the stock phillips head case covers are, i stripped like 3 trying to get em off, im replacing them with some stainless allenhead bolts that my job loaned me but i dont have the longer ones, i think they are somehwere around 55mm long? neone know where i could go to get em? home depot lowes etc etc? the g force adjustable axles on ebay? they any good? i was wanting to widen the rear a tad for some more stability but i dont wanna buy junk axles. the heel guards are they necessary? my stock ones are gone and i was wondering if many of u had issues with foot slippage and did i need to order some nerfs with heel guards or will some regular nerfs do it? thats all, lol i know u like damn but as stated im on a cell and posting is a chore so i have to make it worthwile.... thanks again Quote
AKheathen Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 i flipped my rims around, and gained about 5 in width, but i dn't know how much is tire; could only be 4 in, but im just over 48". and, sprockets are cheap, if you want better gearing. the stock phillips are actually #3 philips, not the normal #2. if you don't have an impact hand driver, you could just press and turn the screw, and hammer the handle to get them to break loose. i have a fastener store in town, but i bet you can get thm on line, or at an autoparts wearghouse. the heal gaurds aren't that important, i havn't had any slippage, and i had a pretty ruff ride last time with a frozen shock on the front.
