gearb0x Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 G'day, Just got in from having a nightmare with my rear caliper, cant seem to bleed it but thats not my problem Even without the brakes bled properly the back brake is dragging enough to heat up the caliper & smoke. I think it might be the block off plate thats on there. When i pulled apart the caliper to clean the piston i notice when i was assembling that the pin for the handbrake, when it goes into the hole in the block off plate, it has a hydralic seal meaning that its very hard to get on (and off because its vacummed on) could this be effecting the caliper at all? I notice the piston wont go all the way in with the block off plate mounted. I was thinking of drilling the hole bigger & deeper in the blank plate to stop the hydralic seal & allow the caliper piston to slide in all the way, is this allright? Phill Quote

Phill The pins the caliper floats on are probably seized up (the caliper body moves independently of the steel backing plate). If you get your Clymer manual out, it will show you how to get at the pins and lube them. :thumbsup: Quote
BenBB Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 The e-brake pin/bolt...you can rip all that stuff outta there, anything to do with the parking brake can go bye-bye, it'll only cause problems like you have now. Check the pins like FireHead said, make sure they aren't bent and you could also grease them with brake grease. Other than that you might have some warpage on the disc if it got that hot, but to me it sounds like the parking brake guts is what's sticking or holding things up... Quote
travis6767 Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 If the brake line is old it can cause brakes to drag, if the fluid is dirty or if the line is cracked,that may also be the reason for not being able to bleed it Quote

BenBB Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 If it goes to the parking brake, yes, I tried to find a breakdown and the factory parts fiche doesn't show jack, I don't remember exactly what all was in there...the arm and some kinda bolt, big acme-threaded thing...I could pull one of my blockoffs off and take a gander if ya want. I suppose you could file it down, or cut it off though. Sounds like the caliper seized up though. Tear it all apart and clean it up. Quote
gearb0x Posted September 11, 2008 Author Report Posted September 11, 2008 thx for the help guys, problem solved Turns out the caliper wasnt siezed but the pin for the handbrake was stuck in the block off plate, pain in the ass had to whack it in a vice to get it out. I drilled the hole slightly bigger & deeper that solved that. The problem that was stopping it bleeding up, the rubber thing in the reservoir got sucked to the bottom and i didnt notice, Once i pulled it out it bled up in seconds :S Phill Quote
