I would start at 150 main (155 seems a tad high right now), 50 pilot. im at sea level and thats what seems to run well with a good port and same setup you have... just remember every bike runs different so the 155 may be good for your bike. just play with it.

what terrain you running in?

I am interested in your results. I have a similar setup but with different pipes. I am newish to this and don't have mine setup right yet.

I am conservative because of fear of burning it up. I have been as fat as 172 (at 165 now).

Everything that I have seen in searches says 155 should be rich.

My plug chops look lean but my plugs after a ride look really rich.

I now think I am running the bowls dry durning the plug chops (but not during regular riding).

I am curious weather or not you run into the same problems.

If you don't run your bowls dry, it might eliminate some resolution paths for me.

My set up is very similar to yours.4mil long rod,mx port, high comp,t'5s,Pods or open air box. With 28pwk's at sea level,@70deg i ran 48pilets,jjh needles 4th clip,162 mains, air screws 1 1/4 out.I doubt your sucking the bowls dry unless your running peaked out for more than a half mile.It is possible to suck the bowls dry,the right side is usually the first to go dry.I did just that a couple years ago on a white knuckle run along the canal to Mexico. My gps said i averaged 67mph for over 11 miles before she popped.I now run 33's

If you still have the airbox on your bike, lid or no lid, you are WAY rich on your mains. You could probably drop down to a 150 and still be alittle rich. You are more than likely thinking you are running the bowls dry, when you are actually bogging from being rich. Alot of people make that mistake with the 28mm carbs.

Whats your setup?

I didn't mean to hijack this guy's thread, just wanted to make sure he passed things on once he got it dialed in.

I am pretty confident I am running the bowls dry. It doesnt bog. It cuts completly out after a bit having it pinned long enough in 6th doing 85+ MPH, and the plug chop looks a little lean (even with 172s)

No air box... I have Pods, PWK 28mm, vf2 reeds, 4 mil HR crank, long rod, I am told it has a mild port, only 21cc domes and DG pipes.

I need to get rid of the fuel filter and start the testing over. I just want see if I get confirmation that I don't need to switch to pingel or get bigger bowls, or drill out the fuel passages in the carbs. (which I have heard could be necessary). If the bowls weren't running dry, I would just be dropping the clips since, when I ride I am more often at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle and the plugs look rather rich.

Question: do you get much more power between 1/2 throttle and full? (I do not)

Those would be correct for the 33 or larger series carbs. The 28's take totally different needles, they are allot smaller.I've had verry good results with jjh needles when running the 28's.Now with the 33's on the same engine i run cel needles.Hope that helps. John

I have both sets of needles in question,in my hand as i type this.they are two totally different animals. The cel is twice the diameter+3/8of a inch longer. This will not work in the 28's! Your builder is obviously not familiar with the 28pwk's or he's clueless.
