1. The 1.84 final ratio didn't work! It was bog city at the drop of the clutch & it wouldn't pull the gear in 6th. It was an early exit in the 1st round on Sat. Sun. we had the 1.94 final ratio installed. It worked well & we made it to the semi-finals. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 😁
2. We are starting to get a little heat in the steels, but not much. There's one or two what I call skid marks on 3 or 4 of the plates. The 3 dimpled plates I was testing have no heat marks. While we have not made any changes to the clutch tune, it's making more heat & slip! The reason being is, the clutch is seeing more load. Anytime you add more weight to the quad, in our case the rider it equals more load. This also happens when you change the gearing also. So, we added my other son weighing 290 lbs. & started with a final gear ratio of 2.06 then went to a 1.94. Of course, we got more load & slip. We are racing it this weekend & we changed the final gear to a 1.84. This is unchartered gearing for us. Anyway, I decided to add 10 lbs. of base pressure & added 3g of weight to 3 of the lockup arms. In anticipation of the added clutch slip. The arm weight is for the 5-6 shift that we've had all along but wasn't using 6th gear. FYI, the 1/8-mile heads up race we were getting ready for is cancelled. So, we are going back to 1/4-mile racing for now. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 🤑
3. The new billet clutch cover is great, wish I had it years ago! We raced the DMX a little over a week ago & improved our time by a .10 with just a gearing change. We're a racing it this weekend 1/4 mile. We're going to use a 1.84 rear gear ratio, unchartered territory! The Kingman Street Drags was cancelled & we are going back to 1/4-mile racing. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 🙃
4. Need to give the infamous DMX some love. We installed a new Matton Machine billet clutch cover today. Very nice piece for this old, experienced clutch tuner! Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 🤫
5. Here's the time slip. Quicker & faster ETs are coming! Facebook
6. I tutored my son Angel very well on clutch tuning & he soaked it up pretty good! Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! Facebook
7. I have to give a shout out to the new (to the quad) transmission fluid we've been testing in the DMX. We've been using it in our race transmissions for 20 years, approximately. I don't know why I waited this long to use it in the quad! Anyway, the fluid is ATI Super F Synthetic Type F Racing Transmission ATF. We're using the 20 weight the same as our drag car. They also make the ATF in 50, 30, 20, 10 & 0 weights. While doing our clutch inspections we have found zero heat on the steals. We have also been hot lapping when testing with no cooling clothes or fans on the clutch cover. So far, I'm sold on using the ATF in the quad. It has always worked great in the drag car! Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 🫡
8. Well, the initial hit of the clutch was pretty soft for track this past weekend. The DMX didn't really make a move until about 10'-15' off the start; it would move out then go on the wheely bar when the clutch hit! It will probably be good for the street hook up, but slow on the 60' for the track. Hopefully be testing in Mexico around the end of Feb. Need to get a Dragy to get some data in Mexico. I've ordered a billet Mattoon lock-up clutch cover for easy adjustments to the clutch in the future. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 🙃
9. Testing this past weekend at the track went pretty well. We were about .2 slow on the ET than I wanted for the baseline runs & the MPH was slower than wanted also. Overall, it was a good test session with my 6'3" son/sail weighing in at 290 lbs. The final gear ratio was off 1 or 2 rear teeth. The carbs are rich & the clutch was set-up for the street, not the track! Most of testing from now on will be done on the streets of Mexico, Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 😛
10. We tested the DMX on the streets of Mexico today. Still had the same clutch set-up from last test hits. We made the following adjustments for next weekend at the track. The clutch showed no heat in the plates as we figured it has too much base pressure at the launch. We took 20 lbs. of base pressure out. We also had a little slippage on the 3-4 shift & we added 15g/5g per arm of weight to 3 of the lock-up arms. We also replaced 4 frictions with new of the 8 frictions. Something we are trying new is adding dimpled plates (3) for slippage to start out with. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 🫵
11. We got some testing done on the streets of Mexico today. My big son was riding today. This video is a short hit to around 300' getting into 3rd gear. As you can hear we had a Bogg on the 1-2 shift. We made 4 hits today & the last one we got it right. We never got it to hook in 1st gear, but it got better as we lowered the tire pressure. The last run was pretty darn good for the street & ran it through 4 gears. The plugs showed fat & will wait to lean the power jets out once we get some 1/8th mile runs on it. Next weekend we are headed to the track for the 1st TnT & some time slips. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 😉
12. Nothing wrong with driveline clutches, that I can tell. They all have their pros & cons. I've used many different oils, gear oils & ATF. Most have been mentioned in this thread. I prefer synthetics for everything mentioned in 1st sentence. I'm currently testing ATI Super F ATF (20 weight), it's what I use in the drag car. ATI has five different weight ATF fluids available, hope to do some testing with the different weights. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY!
13. As mentioned in the DMX thread I've been busy! Anyway, been building a DMX toolbox & a stackable modular rolling tool cart. The cart is being used for engine, clutch, gearing, spare parts & everything needed for the track. I have found or not found the selection of clutch tuning parts is not there like it used to be. Barnett was my primary place to go for clutch tuning materials. I guess I'm going to get creative on some items. I'm going to do some or try some things I haven't done before to induce clutch slippage. For now, we are leaving the clutch set-up as is. We may make changes after this next text session. Till then, I'm sure you're on the edge of your seats. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY! 😛
14. Been busy with race shit, getting 3 race vehicles ready for the racing season starting the end of Jan. We're hitting the streets/Mexico again with the DMX this coming weekend. I think we will be better prepared this time for traction, we'll find out. The only drawback is the rider. My 6'3" boy weighing in at 290 lbs. 😮 Hopefully, I remember to video the shit. Thee one & 1700camaro/STY! 😛
15. While the purpose of this test hit(s) wasn't for clutch tuning. What would you do in the clutch tuning to help mitigate the traction issue? FYI, we are going to some better asphalt with some freshened rear tires & some pour a puddle traction compound. Plus, we are going to have our heavy rider on it. We're changing nothing in the clutch, even though I think I should! The only thing I changed in the Lectrons is open up the power jets a little more. Thee one & only 1700camaro/STY!
16. I misspoke about the DMX 300' times. Angel reminded me that it ran consistent 3.50s in 300' & went a best of 3.51. The mph was in the low 90s with a best of 93. Here's one of our 1st test hits with the DMX .
17. Don't know what I posted, but it should be a Banshee DMX with no traction.
18. OK, here's our clutch baseline something I said I wouldn't do. Our clutch spring installed height is .850 & we pressure tested our springs at that height. Results: 176 lbs. total base pressure. Our staggard arm weights are: 3 arms, 22.40 grams on each arm 3 arms, 17.83 grams on each arm This is our basic baseline setting we will start test with. There're secondary factors that play a factor into the basic lock-up settings: crankcase oil, clutch frictions, drive plate material & coatings. I'm sure I forgot some like clutch speed. Tedder (Biff), jump in & help me out, if you wish. The next step is getting a rough fuel tune on the engine. Then hopefully do some 1st gear launches to test the baseline clutch in a couple weeks. Thee one & only 1700Camaro/STY 😛
19. We're going back to the basics with the DMX! While the clutch lever feels pretty light, I have no idea what the baseline clutch set-up is. I pulled the clutch set-up out today to baseline the clutch. It has a Direct Drive Lock-up installed with a decent amount of staggered weight installed. It only had 4 springs installed, 2 appear to be stock & the other 2 are unknown. Pulling out the clutch plates, I found this is an 8-plate clutch system. I have the measuring tools coming to do a complete baseline of the current clutch set-up. This baseline was used for 1/4-mile racing & it will probably change. We will start testing with the baseline. Then will provide the changes made to hopefully improve the 60's with a heavy chassis/rider. Thee one & only 1700Camaro/STY! 😛
20. This stupid quad is consuming way too much of my time since it's been home! We have 2 sets of needles for the Q16 race fuel for the Lectrons. We have the leanest set installed. I changed out 1 set of alky power jets for some smaller Vito's power jets as recommended by Packard. As for the timing, we're going to leave the same timing curve as when it was on alky. Should be updating the pinned Clutch Tuning Thread. Thee one & only 1700Camaro/STY!
21. The DMX is back home. We are hoping to do some short 200' street hits on it the end of Dec. This old man might even launch it a couple of times, LOL! Hoping to get it to the track in Jan. or Feb. for some 1/8th mile times. This whole combo is outdated, heavy & a big 290 lb. rider. Needless to say, we will not be setting the world on fire! Below is a pic of it, hopefully it's the right one. I can't see them on this 3rd world site.
22. The DMX is supposed to be delivered this coming weekend. I'm not sure I'm ready to deal with it! The race car is the priority, as it has always been, but I always made or found time for the quad racing. The good thing is we only have one race planned for its comeback in May 2025, Kingman Street Drags. The plan is to at least get some testing done. Hopefully one time at the track before the event & maybe some short test hits on the street with a Dragy.
23. I don't see the pics, but I use a computer. I do see the pics using Tapatalk, but hate using the phone for this shit. My understanding from Angel is the DMXs are not the ticket to run in 300'. He says the DMs are the way to go over the DMXs. As for the Q16 we were well versed in using it in our 443 Cub. We were quicker & faster than on methanol. I think we started out running the Q with the DMX. Just remember don't put your nose to the can opening & take a sniff. We call that shit Rat Poison!
24. I'm trying to inspire myself. The DMX has been sitting idle since 2019 & I wanted it to be used. Angel is done riding & Justin wants to race it; the issue is he's 6'3" 270 lbs. It might get used once or twice a year. Anyway, it shouldn't give me too many headaches. These are the most recent pics I have. The Quad is fully assembled & needs to be fired up. The only major change to the motor is switching back to Q16 from alcohol. The motor should still put out around 160 hp. 25. Thanks, K110! I don't understand why I can't see what I post for pics. Yes, that was the DMX laid out before assembly. The cases were machined for sprocket clearance.
