  1. well, after blowing the top end at Dumont over haloween weekend I just got the quad back together... unfortunately its kind of a budget build, but I was happy to find out the cylinders had never been bored (its a 97) so now due to lack of parts its setup at 64.75mm bore. new wiseco pistons/rings, bore/hone, and 21cc domes in the coolhead. Any recomendations on anything else I need to do, Its already gone through one heatcycle (cooling down now) and I'll be doing heat cycles all day tomorrow. Jetting will be checked tomorrow also.
  2. when i had my 450, if you filled the oil level to the max mark while cold, it would spew out when it got hot. only fill the oil tank to about 1/4 the way up the safe marks on the dipstick. the oil does expand that much.
  3. black plastic w/ bright orange flame/scallop graphics, orange springs on black shocks, black frame, orange A's and swinger, black rims with orange beadlocks, black engine with orange cylinders, blacked out pipes. basically, black and orange...
  4. cool sounds like a plan. I'm trying to keep this a mild fun quad with just enough to edge out my buddies on their raptors and yfz's, this banshee is gonna be 100% duner to the core as i doubt it will even get dirt tires on it again. anyway, thanks for all the help on here guys. 5. well, i know the motor was gettin really really loose, unfortunately i didnt take the time to look into how bad it was, far as i can tell its 100% stock topend except for the coolhead, and its a 97, so 10 years on a topend, it may have been re-ringed but it hasnt been bored. I Wish any of the machine shops that do 2-stroke stuff here in Vegas would actually return phone calls or pick up the phone when i call. I'm really strapped for cash at the moment so im not lookin to get this done right away. I did find one shop in town (quad mania) that will send my cylinders out to be bored/ported (75/cyl for bore and 350/cyl porting). Does that sound like a good deal, or should i send out to one of the highly recommended guys outside Vegas.?
  6. right cylinder
  7. left cylinder exhaust port
  8. last trip out to Dumont Dunes my motor went bye bye, anyway, it looks like the top ring in both cylinders managed to get stuck into the exhaust port a little bit and snag busting up the pistons. My question is, the exhaust ports got a little bit messed up, would it be safe to just bore the cylinders and put new pistons/rings/wrist pin bearings. or should i get port work done, I'll try to post pictures that look halfway descent, but all i have for a camera is my cellphone, so quality may lack a bit. Right piston ring groove damage, left is about the same
  9. left piston ring groove/missing section of piston dome
  10. I just tore my top end down after having my pistons take a dump, looks like both cylinders had/have the same problem of the top ring gettin hung up in the exhaust port and tore the pistons/rings up, and minor exhaust port damage from one cyl. anyone know of a good machine shop that can do mild port work and bore/hone the cylinders, ill try to get some pictures up of the pistons, the cylinders dont have any deep scratches in them, it just looks like one of the ports got a little dinged up... anyway, any info helps, thanks
  11. ya, i understand that one, my old 1989 finally gave out, clutch grenaded, locked up tranny and blew a hole in the cases... so im trading it in on an 05 with only minor mods to it. ill see if i can get the compression readings before i leave the shop with it. anyway, thanks all.
  12. man, your fuel is cheep then, im in Las Vegas, and i can get 100 on the pump for $5.25, or a 5 gal jug of C12 for $65, basically $13/gallon. I want to be setup to run at Dumont Dunes, so ill be riding between 800 ft to about 2000 feet here in lasvegas. re-jetting is no big deal to me so i can always change jets to the altitude. Anyone in LasVegas, is there any place to get 110-115 octane on the pump in town, or is it just buy it by the barrel? Whats your opinion on running E85 (approx 104-105 octane) in a banshee? good or bad?
  13. stock stroke, stock bore motor running 19cc domes in a cool head, race gas or pump gas, the previous owner always ran VP C12 race gas and im thinking that may be a bit high, seems a mix or straight 100 octane would be better. Opinions, I do not have compression readings but as a rule of thumb, would 19cc domes on a stock cylinder require pump, 50/50, or full race?
  14. anyone going out to Dumont for the weekend of September 28-30? Myself and a few other people that I ride with will be out there either Friday night (the 28th) or Saturday morning through Sunday evening. there will be a black F-350 Dually, champaign colored chevrolet and a white dodge 3500 dually with a 40' or so toybox in my group. I'll be riding my beater banshee (black 89 no rear fenders) my friends will be on a gray raptor 350, a black/red raptor 660, and a couple of polaris outlaws. if you see us feel free to stop by, ill be the younger guy with the chrome/flame helmet.
  15. I'm using red LED clearance lights that would be used on a bus or tractor/trailer and have had no issues with voltage, at high RPM im interested to see how long they hold up to the approx 18V that the shee puts out at 8k+rpm, but i have 10 of em, so its no biggie... (BTW the lights were salvaged off of a totaled school bus from work)
  16. the upper case dosent seem to have any leaks or cracks, its just the lower one that leaks... it is right near the shift shaft on lower crank case (bottom) that there is a crack... it looks like someone tried to fix it with JB weld or epoxy and it just chipped off while riding. I tried to take some pictures of it, but the only camera i have is on my cell phone and you cant make out the crack in any of the pictures. Strokerace, how much do you want for the lower case half? im short on money right now, but in a month or so i may have more to spare... Thanks for the replies
  17. Hi, i recently purchased a 1989 banshee from a friend, its a old beater of a banshee, but its fun to ride... after a new clutch, and an hour or so of redoing the wiring harness. my big problem now is it appears a previous owner had the chain snap and it broke up the crank/trans case pretty good, it looks like someone at some time welded some of it, and used epoxy of some sort on the rest. I'm not planning on putting a lot of money into this quad as i dont have it, and it rides well enough for me now. the crank was trued and welded the last time the engine was re-built (about 15-20 hours of riding). should i just tear down the engine and take it in to work and re-weld it and clean it up with a grinder, or should i buy a new case? if a new case is recommended, what company makes good ones for a good price? Thanks for all the help

I wish i could go, anyone know where my 05 YFZ450 is, it got stolen in the phoenix area... blue and white, big gun evo X exhaust on it (missing spark arrestor and silencer because its in my tool box), sand gecko paddles were on it when it got jacked in april... anyhow, if someone has a quad/bike i could borrow, i have a chevy 1500 that i can tow with...
  19. [ Nothing starts as easy as a twin two stroke (ok...four stroke guys...jump in here with the electric start, etc...ha ha...) LOL, ill admit, ive had a few 4 strokes... but seriously, the electric start aint all that great... if the battery's dead, you gotta push the thing down the trail and pop it in gear to get it goin again... and if the battery is totally shot, it can prevent the engine from running at all... Ill stick with my kicking till my leg falls off if necessary...
  20. well, considering this thread has to do with timing, this may be a good time to ask. just for a bit of info on me, Im studying to become a BMW technician, so i know a little bit about electrical stuff... but anyway, on newer cars with electronic ignition controls, timing is only advanced for initial launch, and is then retarded for economy as well as max rpm efficiency... now, advancing the timing out on a 2 stroke should give you a much better low end torque curve, but if your going for full on top speed, shouldnt you retard your timing a few degrees? Im wanting to know this because im planning on doing a build up on a 89 shee in the next few months. I would like to make it as far from stock as possible, so ignition upgrades are in the plan.
  21. when I was living in vegas, I would go out to Dumont on haloween weekend, turkeyday, christmas/newyears, and presidents day... I usually would go on off weekends during spring and fall also, but I have only gone out once during summer, and it was just about miserable, night riding was the only way to go, and the A/C on my trailer wasnt good enough to bring the temp below 100 during the day... but dumont is where I have most of my time riding at. if you have a shee thats running, dont really matter how good, it will be able to make it up anything, dirt tires or paddles... Lots of fun, but be careful on busy weekends out there, lots of people, and not a whole lot of room...
  22. awesome, thats got to be the most fucked up attempt at using a movie line as a come back Ive ever seen. You can't handle intelligent!, thought it was "You cant handle the truth"... your remark isnt even grammaticallycorrect, you cant handle intelligence may have been a better word to go with... just a thought
  23. not too bad, for an 8th grade english paper... im new to this site and honestly, your threats to sue for public slander and such are funny, this is a members only forum, as in, you have to request to join... thus it is not public, not everyone can join. I do however have to give you props on use of the english language at a sophmore (thats high school sophmore) level.
  24. just looking for a bit of guidance on what clutch I should go with, I havent been in the banshee scene for quite a while. BTW, anyone in the phoenix metro area, if you see a blue and white 2005 YFZ450, vin number is JY4AJ11Y15C0225456, please help me out, it was stolen about a week ago, and i figure its in mexico by now, but by any random chance, if you see it, please call the police and let em know... thanx
