  1. You may be a tad lean, couldn't hurt to go to 320 or 330 if it is 50 deg or less.  310 might be about what you need for summer jetting.  However when you are dialed in right on the money it will take a while for new plugs to put on some color.  Tan is dialed, medium brown is slightly rich/ safer.

I'll keep an eye on 'em. I've been changing plugs every ride...and we only ride for an hour or two. Most of the time's been spent drag racing my buds 450r's...so, it's been on the pipe to say the least. Think I'll leave it, since it's warming up nice.

    Like I said...It's running darned well...no popping, bogging...nuthin.

Pulling strong all the way through...

I'm getting a NOSS head in a couple weeks. I'll clean and seal/regasket the intake, etc., and compression test when done...just to be safe. I'm probably worrying for nuthin...but, at 10K RPM plus...better safe then sorry. I'd rather be just a tad rich than lean:)

It sure is good to be beating those 450Rs...though. Can't wait to port her and really put the icing on the cake!!!

Thanks for the input...boys. Much appreciated!

  2. Ok...96 Shee, T5's, K&N Pods, Boyesen Reeds.

Completely cleaned out the carbs, set the float height correctly, etc.

I still think my shee is lean. After riding for a while, the plugs finally get a light chocolate.

But...new plugs...and it takes time for 'em to color. Right now, it's 50s and 60s.

Both plugs are identical, by the way.

And...it is running great! Whippin on my buds 450Rs....

I have 27.5 pilots, 310 Mains, and about 1.5 to 2.0 out on the screws.

It seems to pull forever up top...doesn't pop, doesn't bog...seems to be running great.

Running Super M @ 32:1 with 94 Octane. Think I should be worried?

I'd like to see a little color... I checked and re-checked, to make sure everything was tight/sealed. It is. Plus, I can't see it being an air leak cause it's ripping fast and both plugs are identical....

Any ideas? It's starting to warm up here...and I plan to ride in 65 to 80 degree weather... Should I go 320s or 330s?

  3. No...I'm saying look at your plugs...

280 and 290 was lean for me.

It's a little colder here, averaging about 45 to 55 degrees lately...mine is loving the 310. I'm sure once it gets into 60s to 80s summer weather, I may have to go down to 300.

Thing is...my bike was running very well with 290s. I just wasn't warm and fuzzy about my plugs. 310 and it runs great, and the plugs are light brown...as they should be.

Always better to be a little rich than lean...

My altitude here is also less than 1000 feet. Jetting varies by mods/temperature and altitude...so, just take a good look at 'em, that's all I'm saying....

  4. I'd say premium pump gas, at least 91 octane, would be fine.

Stock head cc is 22, you're just bumping it a bit.

I'd say smaller than 20cc, you'd probably want to bump the octane.

I'm debating weather to get 21 or 20cc domes. I have no intention of running race gas...I have 92 to 94 octane all around...

When I have the cash, I'm going to talk to Dave Noss and get his thoughts...he's a board member and a super nice fellow...+

    Side note...

If you're running the Toomey jet kit, keep an eye on your plugs. I bought the kit just for the needles alone. Mine came with 270 and 280 main. I already had a 290 in there.

I just bumped to 310 since my shees plugs were a bit light for my liking. Runs even better...

I have the T5...though. Keep an eye on 'em, regardless....you might have to fatten up a bit...

  5. Hey...Mink...

Didn't realize you were so close in Romeo...

I emailed a seller on ebay for his 400EX...and I'm watching the item right now....he's in Coloma, MI. It's about a 400 mile round trip for us. I told him I'll keep an eye on it, and hopefully pick it up if the bidding doesn't get too high...

35 to 40 bucks in gas to save a few bucks isn't worth it.

My buddy at our local Honda dealer said about 70 bucks for an all new assembly...they have to be purchased in parts. They don't sell the assembly as a whole.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...TRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Also have few friends looking into salvage yards, etc...If I come across some, I'll be sure to let you know...please do the same.

  6. Nice find...

I'll agree...most of it is rider input. We all agree...our bikes are pretty close. Although...my friend that usually beats me on his stocker (the drag racer) got his a$$ handed to him two out of two times earlier this week...:)

Same rider on my buddies modded 450 got me good, twice...although the owner of the modded 450 can't beat me.

Throw all that away when it comes to trails and track. 450 hands down...much more easy to use power and handling...

After dragging my shee dozens of times against 'em, it's scary how easy those 450's wheelie effortlessly...where mine just hits the pipes and spins or rockets you.

I do give them both credit for getting 'em out of the hole...they're a handful with the shorter wheelbase, that's for sure!

  7. Well...you boys have me a little happier now...

I'd much rather remove the shocks then go A-ARM/ball joint shopping.

Was planning on a pre-season tear down for a good cleaining and greasing this weekend anyways. Got the jetting spot on and ripping...so, it's time.

    Thanks...folks....much, MUCH appreciated.

  8. Lots of squeaking from the front end...96 shee.

Greased 'er up good where there were fittings, and then jumped up and down on her for a few minutes to work it in.

    Still bad...sprayed a little WD 40 in/around the shock bolts...no diff.

I know they're sealed ball joints...time for new A Arms...can the ball joints be replaced?

Was thinking of using a teeny, tiny grease needle to lube up the joints.

    Any other suggestions?

  9. I know...it's a darned shame putting a Honda Part on a shee...but, it's gotta be done.

After reading a good write up here, I'm looking for a 400EX thumb throttle assembly.

I put on a motion pro twist...and If all I ever did was drag...I'd leave it.

But, I know, sooner or later it's gonna kill me in the trails.

Anyone got a 400EX thumb throttle assembly they're looking to part with. Stealership wants about 70 bucks or so...

    Thanks!

  10. Personaly...I think you are WAY too rich on the pilots.

Especially if you're using an airbox. I'd bet 27.5 would be fine (1 up from stock) or...at the very most 30.

I have twin pod K & N filters (No airbox), and Toomey T5's.

Mine loves 27.5 pilots, and 1.5 turns out on the air screw.

On 290 Mains it ran real good, but the plugs were a little white for my liking.

I just put in 310s and I will be riding this weekend to see if it's ok, which...I think it'll be fine. But, it's only 40s and 50s here right now. Once it's summer weather, I might jump down to 300.

Yes, if you didn't hold the throttle wide open when you killed it for your plug chop it will not color properly.

That link I posted can give you way more advice than I ever could writing here.

I honesly think you are way RICH on the pilots for just a set of pipes and airbox snorkel/lid removed....

  11. I've been riding with three good friends...all on the new 450Rs.

(makes me sick...but, it's good ball busting...)

    One is 100% bone stock

One has Yosh full system, jet kit and air filter.

One has Yosh full system, jet kit, HRC Kit, Dura Blue (thanks to a non forgiving steel pole) and a few other odds and ends.

My bud said the HRC definately is a top end cam...

Oh..and it doesn't matter what cam you put in...it's only gonna rev so far...with stock ignition...they DO have rev limiters...which sure make a lovely sound when hit...:)

My 96 is stock motor, T5s, K&N Pods or Toomey 2 into 1, Boyesen reeds and that's it.

Here's the funny part....the guy on the bone stock can beat me about every time. but...to his credit, he spent years racing built, strecthed...Alocohol Banshees. He's a drag racer, period....

The pipe and Jet kit only is about 50/50...

And, the most built one...I beat him 75% of the time. Only his 3rd year riding.

Before I T5'd my shee...I couldn't beat any. I could beat the last one out of the hole every time, but...he'd run me down by 3rd and just left me...once piped though..WHOLE 'nother story...

    I honestly think two things...

The bikes are all pretty close, it's who gets the best jump and start that wins 95% of the time, and...it's more rider than bike. That explains me getting beat by a stocker...but winning most of the time vs. the most built of the three.

They're good bikes...but, I love watching those compression whores start...

One thing you gotta admit, four stroke joker or not...the shee sure starts and sounds like no other!!!

  12. thanks guys

i live in michigan, so about 1200-1600.

thanks for the info i am putting the 21cc in, one more thing i know i should rejet it but how much of a difference will it be on jetting?

    jay

    344206[/snapback]

    Hey...Jay...what part of Michigan?

I'm in metro detroit, and unless you venture into the mountains of the UP, you're in 1000 Ft. or less elevation...

(I had to look up a topo map for a buddy that was jetting his quad...:)

Our average is only 900 feet...just FYI...

  13. Hey...XX. Not trying to hijack or crap on this thread, but I'm looking for a similar answer.

Just got a motion pro twist and TORS removal/Idle speed screw kit put on mine.

Going to trail ride a bit with the buds, and I'm thinking a thumb might tame the beast a bit.

I hope to find one that will work with the Motion Pro cable that came with the twist....

Let me know if you get a good answer, and I'll do the same...

  14. I agree...well built.

I am going to have to bend my T-5's a bit...since the left side melted a small hole in my BRAND NEW outerwear...and burned just a tad on the filter itself...

However...I used this with back to back with my K&N Pod filters with outerwears, and could honestly not see/hear/feel a difference. Tried new plugs with each filter, both the same...nice, light chocolate brown!!! :)

I do like how the 2 into 1 tucks up under the seat...a little more out of the way then the pods and less likely to get splashed or dirty as fast.

I'd say if you already have pods, don't bother. But, I look at it this way...If I'm riding for a weekend...I have a spare air filter in case one or the other gets dirty...

    :)

  15. Ahaa...very nice to know, thanks very much!!

My roommate is a machinist....he can do that easier than I can...with all the tools and equipment at his disposal...

Can it still run on pump 92 to 94 octane with a 3 to 4 degree boost?

Running Super M @ 32:1, and the shee loves it.

  16. When it goes into hibernation this winter, I'm going to pull out most of the stops.

I'll do the street bike clutch setup then, complete with Hinson goodies and all.

For now, I just want an affordable yet reliable solution for this riding season. I'm pretty sure if a stock lasted this long, a barney will last 1 season.

End of season, I'm going fresh pistons, port and polish job, ignigtion...NOSS head, etc.

I might do the 4Degree timing key and NOSS head in the next two months...but, end of year for sure, along with the VForce 2 or 3.

When you say streetbike...you mean the R6, right? Also...will steel and fiber fit on the 'shee...or just the fiber? What about springs? Use the Street springs, stock springs, mix of each...different springs?
