timing advance and lightening flywheel mods
dajogejr replied to kluke1983's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
Word...what he said. Boonman is a great guy...just make sure you get the correct thread in flywheel puller when you do yours. A Jaw style will wreck your flywheel... For probably less than 100 bucks, you can have your flywheel shaved and put that timing plate on. Dollar for dollar...I don't know if there is a better mod for the shee..(Ok...I know pipes are the best mod to start out...but, they're a heck of a lot more than 100 bucs... ) -
What other mods are done to your banshee... I'd almost say stick with a 4mil crank, no case work to be done at all and only the heads need to be recut OR a spacer plate (removes the stealth factor...) However, if you're into pure power and have already done all the other mods...you should seek out a reputable builder local to you or else found on this site or planetsand.com. Good luck...there are PLENTY of people that build banshees...

I think your rings are ok... As RN said, you'll probably need to compensate for the cold by one or more of the following: Pilot jet and/or air screw mixture for idle and better starting, and...if you haven't richened up your mains for the colder weather, you're probably sitting on a gernade waiting to happen. A properly tuned and jetted shee should kickstart in 2 to 3 kicks just about every time...regardless of temp.
-
Pretty safe to say you can smooth them out and remove any manufacturing burs or rough edges. Don't polish the intake...smoothing it a bit is ok.
-
Let someone else port them...unless you don't mind the fact since you don't know what you're doing, you could very well make them worse. Porting is an art..and it much more than raising the ports, making them larger...etc. It has to do with shaping them, etc., to get the right power characteristics you are looking for. You could very well slow your motor down if done incorrectly... Plus..if you screw 'em up bad enough, another builder may not want to touch them... I'm not telling you not to do it. But..I am telling you be careful and be ready to pay the piper should you hack 'em up... I'm pretty good at reading wiring charts and soldering connections...but I wouldn't attempt to wire my house...you dig?

Bad idea...if you wait till you burn up a piston, it could break apart and cause other damage... Just keep an eye on your compression. Should be roughly 130's or so new...a little more or less. When it gets harder to start, and the compression gets lower than say...110 to 105, just rebuild it. No use in waiting till it blows. It will give you roughly 370cc or so...depending on what bore you choose... A 4 mil really won't give you more Horsepower...it will give you more tourque. Which...is what you need to pull that gearing better... For 1500...you could at least get a fresh top end, 4 mil stroker and pipes, if you shop around. Porting too...
-
Keep the stock pistons in the bike until it needs new ones or is worn with low compression. Wiseco prolites are still great pistons. If you go 4mil stroker, you'll need the 795 series with the offset wrist pin.. Of course stock carbs will work on Cub Cylinders...but, it'll benefit greatly from at least 32mm carbs... Dollar for dollar, mod for mod, you simply can not beat a banshee for performance. Handling and suspension still leave a lot to be desired, though...
-
All kinds of places. Do a search on here for them. I know Jeff @ Fast has 'em. I'm sure Jim @ Passion has 'em. You could even find 'em on ebay. I found Cubs, Noss head, Vforce Reeds, gaskets and pistons on Ebay for about 1500 just yesterday...
-
Yep... www.rickystator.com for the adjustable timing plate. 35 bucks plus shipping last I checked. PM Boonman on these forums for your milled head, and...ask him about shaving your flywheel. You can have all 3 of these mods done for less than 150 or so, and well...well worth every penny.

Ha ha!! If I get a few side jobs by a franchise, I"m not going to even waste my time having Jeff port my cylinders, I'm going ported cub and 4 mil, with 32 Lectrons soon. As much as I'd like some shearers or CPIs...I think I'll take my all around power of my T5s for now. If this turns into a drag/dune only quad, you bet I'll have some Shearers soon.... Yeah, your setup was pretty raw, JT. I'm going to have my T5s blasted and ceramic coated in the next couple of months. He does powder coating too...if you wanted to get that swinger done, let me know...he's in Michigan, and did up my buddy's Mach Z with powder and painted plastic, looks suite. Lemme know if you want some pics of his sled...
-
Word!! LS7...JT's bike flat out gets it...period. However, it's pretty safe to say he has more than 1500 into it, right JT? I'm sure they're running 18/38 in the quarter...but, his bike is Bone stock...highly doubt too many of the folks over at PS are stock...running that gearing...
-
I'd get a 4 mil stroker to help pull that gearing, it really gives you more torque...not HP. Good pipes, a good port job, cool head and see where that gets you. With Shearer pipes, you're going to need bigger carbs to get the most out of them. You're going to break that budget quickly. Although Shearer pipes are great, great pipes...they lack in low end more than just about any other pipe. T5s, Paul Turner Mids, FMF or ProCircuit would be a better choice... Shearer are pretty much strict drag pipes...and I think you'd hurt yourself until you had a better overall package. Don't forget a shaved flywheel and an adjustable timing plate...both very cheap and easy to do, well worth the reward...

In that case, I'll buy that 100%. Now...throw some engine work into her...and it'll be a lot more fun to get up to 90+ MPH...
-
I would like to see a start to 6th WOT too...no way a bone stock shee can pull a 18T front, unless you're going down hill with a 40MPH wind to your back... What good is 95MPH when it takes a mile plus to get there? Blue Duece...no doubt yours will pull it with porting, carbs, pipes, and your other mods. I'd still like to see a real video...not just rolling by off camera...
-
Make sure those are STOCK carbs on that bike... Even the dealer never put 180 mains in the stock carbs...unless you live or bought it at 4000 or 5000 feet. Stocks were 200 or optional 210... With those mods...I'd be surprised if it even ran past half throttle with the choke on... If they are stock carbs, and you plan on keeping your airbox with the lid off...as said above. I'd get a set of 300 to 340 mains, and you'll end up fine.

Very nice to know...mods are a coming soon!

SWAT Team Shoots Armed Fla. 8th-Grader

I agree...the real tradgedy is the officer living with this. If there is an investigation, he'll be cleared. But, he/she still has to live with that the rest of his life...even though he was in the right. Shitty all the way around... -
You could answer the first question...you do have aftermarket pipes, right? depends on what kind of riding you do...on the carbs. A good aggresive port and pipes that rev will reward a larger carb setup, say 34 to 39mm. However...that's good for dunes, drag racing...or other high speed, high RPM riding. If you just plan on boming around with buddies, trail....light racing, some dunes, etc., sotck carbs bored to 28mm, or up to 32 or 34mm will suit you. It's really two questions. Where you ride, how you ride. You don't build a top end only motor for trails, but you don't build a low end trail motor for wide open dunes and drag racing... With good pipes, reeds, fresh top end and porting a stronger clutch is a great idea. It's my honest opinion that clutch springs mean more than the plates themselves... Do a search on here for clutches... The one I have from Jeff @ FAST is great, about the same price as a standard aftermarket clutch...

LONGWOOD, Fla. - An eighth-grader was shot and wounded by a SWAT team officer in a school bathroom Friday after he pulled out a pellet gun that resembled a real weapon, authorities said. -
Yeah, if he's got 1000, minus 500 for pipes, minus 220 for shoes, leaves about 280 by my calculator. Can probably get the VForce, head milled, lightened flywheel and adjustable timing plate for that...give or take. You'll be happy then!!

If you have to ask, you need to take it to a shop. They'll remove metal and shape the stock cages. However, since you asked...I'm sure you don't have the tools to do so. I think stock reed cage porting runs 30 to 50 a pop, but...I'm not sure. Someone will chime in here shortly with some people that can do it, and probably a price, too...
-
Very well put...snowprophet... HOwever, United, you DO at least have aftermarket Pipes and silencers for that, right? Pipes and opening up the airbox, followed by jetting, are the absolute first mods for a banshee... Stock carbs believe it or not, can go a long way....
-
You talking about just the reeds, or cages too? Boyseen make a fine aftermarket reed. Since you are on a budget (aren't we all... ) those will be just fine for now. When you have the money to spend, I don't think anyone will argue VForce Reed cages and reeds are a nice improvement and a solid investment. Sure...you can get your stock reed cages ported, etc. But...with the V Force you just slap 'em in, and the reeds will last a bit longer.. T5s are a fine choice, by the way. Look in the for sale section here, also on Ebay...you might be able to save a few bucks.... I got mine a little cheaper from a member here. A little rusty...but, saved a lot over retail!

Good for the SWAT team. A while back here in detroit, Police shot a mentally slow guy with a rake...all over the news. What the news failed to depict was there were 5 uniformed officers with their guns drawn. The man had a steel garden rake...not the big old plastic leaf kind, and he was holding it in the air, arms positioned shoulder width on the handle in a swinging motion. The public made a big deal because he was mentally slow. 1. 5 Officers in Uniform with a gun drawn to you. If this doesn't say "Stop, or we will shoot", nothing does. A Uniformed officer, let a lone 5, should tell you caution. 2. A STEEL garden rake could kill or seriously injure someone. I for one wouldn't want to get knocked upside the melon with one of them... 3. They did their job, they went home to their wifes and kids that night... It is true, police can abuse power...but so can politicians, executives, etc.... They are trained, if you feel your life and/or saftey of those you are protecting (public, family, etc) are in danger, do what you must to protect them and yourself. Bottom line is, sometimes common sense isn't so common.... -
Sooner or later you're going to need that suspension to put the power to the ground effectively... Stock suspension on a shee is flat out horrible. THe cheap mans way of improving it is getting used shocks off a YFZ450, or...spend the coin on Elka, etc. If you think the shee stock suspension isn't that bad, you haven't ridden too many other quads...or if you have, their suspension was beat to all hell...
