Smaller tires tend to dig in the sand more. For example, picture rolling a golf ball across the sand. Now roll a basketball, which will go further? I'd say just grab a 15tooth front sprocket before you go to the dunes, I'm sure it'll be fine. If you've got too much low end then just switch out to the larger sprocket.

Ooo, how about I get my wife to work on the bike for me. Matt, you and I can sit back, drink and snap pictures for the babes on banshees contest!

Save some money on all that frame straightening crap and just pour a can of V-8 in the tank.

What To Do To Your First Banshee?
Wallrat replied to J.D. Blackwell's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
Ben, are you running an aftermarket head on that bad boy? If so, how painful was installation? -
You can't polish a turd. Save your money.

If you just want a rough estimate of how fast you're going and don't wanna spend some cash on track time, gps, speeding tickets, etc. try this: Grab a good tape measure. Chalk out a 'start timing line' somewhere where you can hit the line when your tapped out in 6th. Measure as far as you can away from that mark with the tape measure. The further you make the distance, the more accurate the speed estimate will be. So lets just say that you measure 500 feet. Draw another line, that'll be the point that your buddy will stop the stopwatch. Do your speed run having your buddies start the stopwatch when you hit the first line at top speed and stopping it when you hit the 2nd line. Do several runs and record the times for each one. Since your buddy probably can't see both lines have him stand at one and have another buddy wave an arm when you pass the other line. Or just have the passenger in the chase car do the timing. Now take your times and do a little math: rate=distance/time 3600 seconds in an hour 5280 feet in a mile "/" means divided by Ok, I did the legwork so all you have to do is enter your numbers to get your speed, or close to it. distance / time x 3600 / 5280 = mph So lets say that you did the 500 feet in 4.8 seconds: 500 / 4.8 x 3600 / 5280 = 71.022mph If you're going 120mph then you'll pass the 2nd line in just over 2.8 seconds. Do several runs, compute the speed for each one. Add up the speeds on all the runs you figured out and divide by the number of runs to come up with the average. This will help factor out bad stopwatch skills. Just remember to measure out as much as possible. Even at 500ft, an error of .1 second on the stopwatch will equal about 1.5mph.

Other pipes are better, but if you have both, run the FMF's.

Get a clymers manual. It will help you fix problems and help a whole lot when you're trying to do suggestions made by people on this board. Also check that your carbs are sync'd. Easiest way is to turn the gas off and with the engine off, open the throttle and let it close. Listen to the carbs, you should hear only one 'click'. If you hear 2 seperate clicks then your carbs are WAY off and that could easily cause only one pipe to smoke. You can determine which carb is lagging by placing one end of a screwdriver on each carb and the other end on your ear. Banshees run really well and aren't hard to start or keep running when they're properly maintained. What kind of compression do you have on each cylinder?

Ok my 87 shee is looking pretty worn out. I've got a ride on President's Day weekend that I need to have everything back together for. I just bought the bike used in October and have been riding too much to do any TLC. So here's a quick list I came up with of all the stuff I'm gonna do over the next month: Remove: plastics, seat, tank, tires, exhaust, sprockets, chain, swingarm, axle, hubs, a arms, j arms, carbs, reeds, head clean carbs replace coolant change oil inspect reeds pull the flywheel and have the stator rewound (freebie) polish up the exhaust (they're very rusty) drop a tooth on front sprocket clean everything pull the hubs and grease the splines install grease fitting in the bearing carrier bead blast and paint a arms, j arms, and swingarm re-weld steering stop on frame (mine's cracked) inspect brakes lube all cables install aftermarket skidplate replace the many missing bolts install aftermarket exhaust hangers Inspect head and pistons That's the list so far. I have next to no money so its all just gonna be in an effort to clean things up and keep me from having any problems in the near future. The only things I'm buying (hangers, skidplate, bolts) are because mine are either missing or broken. So while I've got it torn down, can you guys think of anything else I should do? Remember it has to be either cheap or free.

Dirt Bike Motors In Quad Frames?
Wallrat replied to trail rider's topic in General Banshee Discussion
Engines polute. Get a used power wheel and put all the batteries and the electric motor into the banshee. You should still be able to pull away from that 80ex! -
I don't think we have enough prizes to swing that. Don't get me wrong, prizes for 2nd and 3rd place sound pretty good, but I think it'll have to be only the top 3 people receive prizes. Maybe the good loot will go to first, a tshirt or maybe some not as neat loot for 2nd, and some stickers n stuff for 3rd? For those waiting on a start/end date, Lee is working on the site to give us the kind of features that we want for this contest. He's testing it now so hopefully we'll have some idea of a timeline in the near future. Don't hesitate to get your pictures done though. All the rules are posted. Just hang onto your pics until the official entry date. Oh and don't forget to have BHQ in the pics. I found that this was kinda hard to do, what do you guys think about having to only have BHQ or BansheeHq in at least ONE of the pics IF all the pics are of the same bike, same girl, same location? That way we know that the pictures were specifically for this contest, and we don't have to put cheesy cardboard signs in every shot - they distract the viewer from the subject.

Hey I was gonna get my stator rewound by the electrical contractors that work for us. I guess they did another guys stator that works here when he was rebuilding his ATC. I'm gonna ask them to max it out, if I do that, will I need to get anything like a voltage regulator or anything like that to keep from frying stuff? I've got some big ass headlights that are wasted on a stock stator. I'm hoping to run at least 100w bulbs in the lights. I just need to know if I'm gonna need to rewire or if its just a simple matter of sticking the rewound stator back in.
-
Oh crap did I start the contest? I think we need to know if Lee is gonna setup a special kinda voting thing for this. If we do a regular poll, we're limited to 10 entries that we can vote on. As soon as we have the submitting/voting thing setup, then I say we start it. 2 weeks to submit, 1 week of voting.

Oh great, blind the guy following behind you. Still, sounds pretty sweet Just!

I agree with the suspension mods. Your banshee should have plenty of power to keep you happy for quite awhile. Later on down the road if you feel like its getting tame, then throw on something for power. If you keep doing that everytime you develope the skill to control the new power, eventually you'll have a powerful bike that handles well, and you know how to ride it.

Anyone Up For Another Bhq Get Together?

Trust me, I'm the least likely person to get offended by anything. But yeah I know what you mean. Besides, I have to stay in the good graces of all you RV'ers if I want a chance at a shower. Hahahaha -
Anybody got a pic of the DMC 916 kit installed?

Here's a video of a nitro rustler jumping 3 cars parked end to end: Sick Air Vid

Actually having a chase car to give you your speed won't give you an accurate measurement. The spedo's in cars arent very accurate. The manufactures know this so they error them on the side of going faster. Every vehicle is different, and some makes tend to be closer to actual speed than others. Also something to consider is whether the stock wheels are on the car. These errors aren't small either, I'm talking about the spedometer saying 100mph steady and the radar gun showing 89mph. So maybe that little tricked out turbo rollerskate that tit's friend was driving was rolling on some 10's. In that case tit, yup you were going 120 relative to the piece of shit that was following you. But in real life speed, you were probably closer to 75mph. If you measured out the exact distance of say a 1/4 mile, started a timer as you entered the measured area, and ended the timer exactly when you left the measured area, you'd see that you were no where near that fast.

I've got a nitro rustler. IMO if you want 4 wheel drive or reverse, get the tmaxx. If not, get the rustler. Although I will say that there are more parts for the maxx but the rustler is faster out of the box. Plus it jumps WAY better. My buddy's got the 2.5 tmaxx and i've got the 2.5 rustler. He's got a bunch of hop ups and mine just has a stinger exhaust and different tires. I kill him on every type of terrain except for climbing steep loose hills where I can't get any speed before hitting the hill (my tires just dig). Whenever I drive his it feels like a total boat. That thing is friggin heavy and clumsy. I've taken mine to the dunes and I easily catch more air with that thing then I do on my shee. I think the rustler goes for $260 or something so its cheaper than the maxx too.

No worries 370. I've only been there the one time and already my memory of the place is fading. I was just trying to give an estimate of where those gps coordinates would take you. It sounds like finding camp won't be much of an issue. -

370, sounds like your buddies camp is about 300 feet north of the gps coordinates I gave. I got mine just a bit south, towards the dunes, of the southern outhouse (I think it was number 4). For people arriving at night, you can't see the outhouses but the "road" goes right by them. As you're driving in, you'll pass through a small creek and then a BLM sign. After that you head up a small hill and you'll pass the ranger station on your right. If you stick to the road about a quarter mile you'll pass right by the northern outhouse on your left. It sounds like your buddy camps just passed that point and off to the right of the road. A picture from him will help. Here's the general layout, assuming I identified all the blurry objects correctly: Taken from the top of the eastern dune looking NNW... The blue rectangle is the ranger station. The black line is the road coming in. The black "X's" are the bathrooms The Blue circle is near the area where the GPS coordinates that I gave are. -

Tough call...I love riding sand and don't get to do it enough. I might bring my knobbies, it might all come down to room. I probably won't decide until the day I'm loading everything up whether I'm bringing them or not. I agree though, it looked like some sweet desert trails out there! -

Maybe I'm nuts but comp didn't look nearly that tall to me. Maybe 1200' long from as you ride bottom to top but I don't think it was that high. Don't get me wrong, its big. But there are steeper hills then comp, they're just not as wide. One in particular right next to comp goes straight up to a razorback and then straight down the other side - make sure you slow down for the top on that one!
