  1. Sounds like your carbs are out of sync, or you have a little dirt in one of your pilot jets....or yes a possible air leak
  2. Agreed, big bores are over-rated, overpriced ,and ineffective compared to stroking and matched porting. Although ,on short track motors, IMO its easier to use the plate instead of stroker domes to build for the type of power needed to maintain torque off the turn and still have the top end speed to pull away on the straights. .....Jim
  3. Im not knocking your CUBS my friend...definately not. I just cringe at the act of de-tuning anything from where it already is in power output...sacrolige at its finest. Its basic economics in my book...build a trail port for trails for cheap, and buy CUBS for balls out. Alot of riders would find themselves in trouble with such explosive power in the tight stuff and could actually run faster with a broad, predictable less explosive power delivery.......Jim
  4. Thats funny you say that Justin. Had a guy call me from the east coast the other day with a hot MX port of mine....says thats how he does it too....around 15 feet per gear pull on the straights over hopped 450's last I heard......Jim
  5. Gas analyzer is obviously much more accurate, but for most of us earthlings , reading a plug properly is the best we can hope for in the field......Jim
  6. Save yourself a ton of cash. You can build as fast or faster short-track engine on stroked stock cylinders....Jim
  7. In most cases 55 pilots work well for a stable idle on PJ's. Turn the choke/idle knobs in fully clockwise and back out around 9 turns evenly....mark the tops of adjusters with a paint pencil to keep track of the adjusters. Even though you have backed them out the same amount, they will be off from each other up to 1 turn or so. If you have a uni-sync, USE IT, and set the idles evenly. If you dont have access to one, put your hands on each pipe while warming up and make sure they get hot at the same rate. If not the cold pipe needs the adjuster backed out, and slide raised until they warm up at the same rate. After total hot warm up, and I mean totally HOT , adjust air screws until highest idle is achieved. NOW ,reset idle speeds at the same amount of turns each regardless of where they ended up at the last go-around. NOW adjust air screws again until highest idle is achieved and again reset idle adjusters at the same rate. Once youve gained as much idle speed as the motor wants to achieve by adjusting air screws, richen the air screws up 1/16-1/8 turn and again set final idle speed with the uni-sync. Now adjust cables until both slides open up at exactly the same time, make sure all cables are fully seated and snap the throttle several times and re-check. Now, PLUG CHOP the mains until desired results are achieved. Once you've done that, now you can adjust your needles for mid-range. If you need to change out the needles for richer mid taper spec,, you may have to drop 1 main size for the best results. If you change the diameter of the needles for richer off idle mixture richening, you may have to drop to 50's on the pilot and start from the beginning once again. These carbs will idle well if you follow this procedure...Jim
  8. Yeah, Steve says the motor sounds posessed and gave him a jolt of a lifetime when he was breaking it in...would love to convert your Toomeys into something simular...you'll be wanting to send them back...just wait.....Jim
  9. BK, you better hope you beat your old man otherwise after words like that youll never hear the end of it... 352556[/snapback] BK....like money in the bank but hey dad, theres more where that came from.
  10. A 70-75 horse 4mm motor ported accordingly can have great bottom end and still hit nearly 110mph geared very tall....Jim
  11. I tuned that motor in less than 2 hours with a lunch break, and that mother is absoutely smooth, predictable and will rip your arms off..Jim
  12. Its not a mild mx, its a new design, I call it the HOT MX port...smooth as silk delivery and just pulls forever....Jim
  13. Pro-lites $145.00 and $55.00 per set for bore,hone and chamfer....Jim
  14. I just did a bore job on those reed conversion cylinders you guys are talking about. Those cylinders were don by Toomey himself and the outcome was impressive as hell. The workmanship was unbelievablly perfect. A TON of time went into those....I should have taken pics...impressive is a understatement....Jim
  15. Yes Oilsmoke, the dyno showed on this particular motor ,CPI's made 3 more horses than Rockets ,and the Sheerers made 7 more HP than the Rockets...thats this engine..results have been different on different engines from the dyno sheets Ive seen. Loco's motor for example liked the Rockets better than CPI's. all of those pipes are good pipes..its all good....Jim
  16. Actually the X-3's were not shipped until the last 30 days along with the only X-1 that I have built. XR's are a completed design and have built and shipped several of those(my most radical quasi-recreational motor). X-3's are a test motor for the ultimate project X which the design work is complete on. The real problem is time. I work myself nearly to death just to keep up with my MX, TT, ST, and Duners so my turn-around times are not just absurd, and actually they are already. On top of that Im doing design work on Cub upgrade porting and dome designs. Final X versions will require my own pipes, domes and reed assembly's of my own design which is going to be a real chore considering how much money it takes to get that happening.. Hopefully this will all come together soon, afterall ,the project design goal was a truly affordable high end ballbuster drag motor based on stock cylinders....Jim
  17. LMAO...you forgot about the part where the possibility of some strange skin condition or warts in strange places
  18. Ive seen those charts reading both ways...it just depends on how your engine is set up. My personal experience on my 4mm stroker motors yields the CPI's as the winner between those two pipes....but Sheerer inframes beat them both in peak HP....Jim
  19. BIgWill has a X-1, BKabina has an X-3 along with a couple of other guys not on the board. And several XR's have been shipped so far....Jim
  20. BUT I broke two piston skirts in two years.... Yep....thats what you can expect from that mod....Jim
  21. Technically they are refered to as "auxillary" ports. This particular example is backyard attempt of what the new Cub cylinders are sporting. Not a bad job though, I would have done them a little differently, but they can be saved if the transfer duration isn't off the charts....Jim
  22. The following is, if nothing else, a genuine hoot. This was an actual letter sent to Ryan De Vries from The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, State of Michigan. Wait till you read this guy's response - but read the entire letter before you get to the response. See if you don't agree with me that it is bureaucrats that need the regulation! - Jim LETTER Mr. Ryan De Vries 2088 Dagget Pierson, MI 49339 Dear Mr. De Vries: SUBJECT: DEQ File No. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20; Montcalm County It has come to the attention of the Department of Environmental Quality that there has been recent unauthorized activity on the above-referenced parcel of property. You have been certified as the legal landowner and/or contractor who did the following unauthorized activity: Construction and maintenance of two wood debris dams across the outlet stream of Spring Pond. A permit must be issued prior to the start of this type of activity. A review of the Department's files shows that no permits have been issued. Therefore, the Department has determined that this activity is in violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, annotated. The Department has been informed that one or both of the dams partially failed during a recent rain event, causing debris and flooding at downstream locations. We find that dams of this nature are inherently hazardous and cannot be permitted. The Department therefore orders you to cease and desist all unauthorized activities at this location, and to restore the stream to a free-flow condition by removing all wood and brush forming the dams from the stream channel. All restoration work shall be completed no later than January 31, 1998. Please notify this office when the restoration has been completed so that a follow-up site inspection may be scheduled by our staff. Failure to comply with this request or any further unauthorized activity on the site may result in this case being referred for elevated enforcement action. We anticipate and would appreciate your full cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to contact me at this office if you have any questions. Sincerely, David L. Price District Representative Land and Water Management Division RESPONSE Dear Mr. Price: Re: DEQ File No. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20; Montcalm County Your certified letter dated 12/17/97 has been handed to me to respond to. First of all, Mr. Ryan De Vries is not the legal landowner and/or contractor at 2088 Dagget, Pierson, Michigan. I am the legal owner and a couple of beavers are in the (State unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining two wood "debris" dams across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond. While I did not pay for, authorize, nor supervise their dam project, I think they would be highly offended that you call their skillful use of natural building materials "debris." I would like to challenge your department to attempt to emulate their dam project any time and/or any place you choose. I believe I can safely state there is no way you could ever match their dam skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam ingenuity, their dam persistence, their dam determination and/or their dam work ethic. As to your request, I do not think the beavers are aware that they must first fill out a dam permit prior to the start of this type of dam activity. My first dam question to you is: (1) Are you trying to discriminate against my Spring Pond Beavers or (2) do you require all beavers throughout this State to conform to said dam request? If you are not discriminating against these particular beavers, through the Freedom of Information Act I request completed copies of all those other applicable beaver dam permits that have been issued. Perhaps we will see if there really is a dam violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, annotated. I have several concerns. My first concern is - aren't the beavers entitled to legal representation? The Spring Pond Beavers are financially destitute and are unable to pay for said representation - so the State will have to provide them with a dam lawyer. The Department's dam concern that either one or both of the dams failed during a recent rain event causing flooding is proof that this is a natural occurrence which the Department is required to protect. In other words, we should leave the Spring Pond Beavers alone rather than harassing them and calling their dam names. If you want the stream "restored" to a dam free-flow condition - please contact the beavers - but if you are going to arrest them (they obviously did not pay any attention to your dam letter being unable to read English)--be sure they are read the Miranda rights first. As for me, I am not going to cause more flooding or dam debris jams by interfering with these dam builders. If you want to hurt these dam beavers - be aware I am sending a copy of your dam letter and this response to PETA. If your dam department seriously finds all dams of this nature inherently hazardous and truly will not permit their existence in this State -- I seriously hope you are not selectively enforcing this dam policy -- or once again both the Spring Pond Beavers and I will scream prejudice! In my humble opinion, the Spring Pond Beavers have a right to build their unauthorized dams as long as the sky is blue, the grass is green and water flows downstream. They have more dam right than I do to live and enjoy Spring Pond. If the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection lives up to its name, it should protect the natural resources (Beavers) and the environment (Beavers' Dams). So, as far as the beavers and I are concerned, this dam case can be referred for more elevated enforcement action right now. Why wait until 1/31/98? The Spring Pond Beavers may be under the dam ice then and there will be no way for you or your dam staff to contact/harass them then. In conclusion, I would like to bring to your attention a real environmental quality (health) problem in the area. It is the bears. Bears are actually defecating in our woods. I definitely believe you should be persecuting the defecating bears and leave the beavers alone. If you are going to investigate the beaver dam, watch your step! (The bears are not careful where they dump!) Being unable to comply with your dam request, and being unable to contact you on your dam answering machine, I am sending this response to your day office via another government organization - the dam USPS. Maybe, someday, it will get there. Sincerely, Stephen L. Tvedten THIS IS FOR REAL!!
