Actually D...2nd is the weakest gear in the tranny...that's why they make a billet 2nd.

:)

Well, that's good to know too. I assumed they made a billet second gear because damn near everyone and their brothers launch in second.

i wonder if 2nd gear becomes the weakest partly due to most people launching in that gear.. or if its just the weakest gear in the tranny from the factory..

i was talked into running a 45 tooth sproket in rear with stock front sproket. anyone ran this? liked it? just wondering because it seems very low to me. gotta shift allot

thats what im running on my bike it all depends on the porting or what kind of work you bike has, even tho you might have an agressive porting it might be setup as a high revver and not as torquie as some different ones to pick up the extra slack the lower teeth would be. its good if you are running like 21' haulers and your bike bogs if you take off on 2nd. mine did that even tho with the porting i have, it just doesnt have the torque but up top you'd better have something in the 4 mill size jeje

well its not exactly that its the weakest its just that the transmission was never intended to you know one day handle this kind of power its a 20 year old design with people putting 3 to 5 times as much power on it you know xD

This is very true...35 HP stock to 120 is just a little bit of a jump...LOL.

2nd is weakest in the tranny, and since a LOT of people launch in it...it gets exposed that much more...

While I don't feel the need to run one in mine, if I ran pavement alot I would definitely get one, there isn't the forgiveness like sand or dirt.

dave, hasnt it been said though that the sand provides a harder hook than pavement provided the swingarm and tire combo is correct??

Ok well here is the deal, I dont just drag race. One minute I am climbing holes, the next minute I could be doing a friendly drag race at boxcar hill or on the flats. It takes a pretty universal setup. I literally use 1st and 2nd in the holes all the time. I use 3rd, 4th, and 5th drag racing. In Oregon its not wide open dunes at all. I do get a chance to ride wide open in spots, but we have to climb stuff like in this video below. Oddly enough the 2 other bikes in that video run much taller gearing than I do. The white and green bike is 13/41, and the black bike is 13/43. They both also run 21" haules. I run 22x11x8 super lites. I can obviously outclimb the two in the hole. I also beat them both drag racing now ( I can still outclimb them also). The white bike is a JSD full drag port 350 with cpi pipes and 35mm pwk carbs. The other one is stock carb, ported 350 with ptr mids. This video was with the 2 into 1 pipe and single carb, I now have twin carbs, port work and pro circuits. The bike has the same bottom end now, but its way faster on the top end with the newer parts.

If you want to play in Oregon and be able to do everything, then this is what you got to run to do it better than everyone else.

Back in 1993 at the Last Sandfest they had I raced in the 350 modified class (gas) with a JD ported 350, stock bored carbs, stock intakes, stock reedcages, a milled stock head, and FMF Gold series pipes on 13/45 gearing. I took 4th place out of 32 riders. I was 14 years old. I was beating grown men. There was even a guy who got DQ'ed for running alcohol.

I have tried different gearing, nothing else works as good. Not back then, and not now.

i ride a cub with pts and two weekends ago we were riding in coos bay. if you go out wooptie...dooo road twards spinreal and we were playing on those hill climbs on the right, the ones past the climbs that go down by the water. and i went down this one, missshifted coming up and stoped sidways on hill. some guys with me said to go down in the trees and then come out. bad idea.......i was down there for 1 1/2 hours. the problem was the hill dead ended in a nother hill so i was stuck in a "V" after a few thousand tries i made it out. my firend got some good pics, but i dont have them yet. hey snoop do you think that runnig a 20' paddel master with a stock front sproket and 45 teeth in rear is to low?

Get rid of the paddle masters, thats a horrible tire for playing in holes with. Stock front is a 14 tooth correct? I would say thats still a little too tall with a 20" tire, but its close with that size tire. You need at least some haulers. I would recommend super lites, they do awesome for everything out there.

I know which hole your talking about. I ended up in the water down in another hole nearby. Here is a vid of me getting out in that one.

i have a set of luber jacks 22 8 paddels, but i would be sunk up to the swing arm all the way up hills. they were like shovels and just dug me holes, so i bought the paddel masters. what is the ideal setup, tires and gearing? my wife will try any hill we find out there and her bike is setup same gearing and tires as mine. i just sent her cyclnders into keven to have a dune port done, and i will be putting pts mids on her bike. she seems to have more problems climbing hills then i do, so i was wondering what i could do to help her sheeee out. it will have kevins dune/ hill shot port, 18 cc domes, singel 35 pwr, advanced timing 6, 110 race gas, pt mids. and the gearing is stock sprocket in front and the 45 in rear. she is allso running 20' padell master. thanks for any imput

Best tire setup seems to be 22x11x8 super lite haulers with 9 or 10 paddles. Gearing for tha would be 13/46 or 13/45.ditch the single Carb and run twin 28mm carbs. Everything we have done for testing on low and mid motors has shown best results with pro circuit pipes making the most torque and HP. Best reed setup to run is carbon tech lows or special order the mid reeds and run them on the stock cages. A wagington or Oregon dune port is gonna be considered different than what a California builder thinks is a dune port. Tell Kevin to keep the exhaust duration at 188 degrees or less. There is not a whole lot of places we need to be going completely balls out.
