hi,

i just bought a 1997 banshee and within the first two hours of riding it the chain locked up and broke the master link off so i got anew master link and loosened the chain and when i shifted into gear it inched along and it revved up and continued to inch along. then i tried 2nd and same thing.

could this be a broken primary drive shaft? or a clutch problem?

if i pull the clutch cover, what should i look for because the way it feels when i ride it is like its not grabbing completely, like the primary drive is grabbing by a thread and when the chain broke it did crunch to a stop when the chain jammed up

A broken chain can indeed be VERY bad news. You need to remove the clutch cover and removed the clutch assy entirely to test both the trans and inspect the clutch for breakage. I have seen everything from a shattered clutch basket to broke off trans shafts and broken gears. Hopefully you do not have to pull the engine. If there is something wrong with the clutch, it should be pretty obvious.

ONce you have the clutch off, you will want to spin the drive and drive shafts of the trans in each gear carefully to detect any lumpy spots in rotation. I caught one a few months ago that was not in for trans work but I knew it needed open heart exploratory surgery. I found two gears from a previous lock up that were cracked and minutes away from total destruction. Chain locks are NOT good....

well the chain chain never locked because i would have felt it skid, it just split at the master link and when i looked at the chain the clip had popped out and the master link was sitting on the ground bent. so obviously the chain was to tight and when it shot, it gunckd up in the front sprocket and mabe that messed something up in the primary drive area because i revved it up a little when it happened thinking it was stuck or something.... :yucky:
