Keyser Soze Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I typically always check my chain before I ride. Ive been noticing the chain will be really lose. Ill tighten it..it will be loose again. Or the chain will be really tight..to the point Ill have to loosen it. The adjustment bolts are still tight. The carrier isnt moving. Someone suggested my swingarm itself may be wore out but I cant really feel any slop in it. Could it be the chain? Quote
njbanshee Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 The chain isn't going to get longer then shorter. No way. Sounds like something isn't tight. Recheck it. Quote
PhilMoore Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Check your axle bearings. When checking chain tension, measure slack, rotate the wheels a Half turn and check again. Do this eight times keeping track of the slack each time. Do you have a "Tight spot"? (Sprocket oval or chain has a stretched area) If the chain is stretched in a spot, you need a whole new chain and sprockets. Quote
Keyser Soze Posted July 7, 2008 Author Report Posted July 7, 2008 Hmmm. Why would I need new sprockets...or is that a precautionary measure? Quote
xXBlessedWithDeathXx Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 (edited) a bad chain could trash new sprockets i would think it works both ways. better safe then sorry. personaly i would get just the chain but i live for now. hell, i need a new one and havent got to it yet. that was over a year ago. PhilMoore Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 A stretched chain will ruin your sprockets. Ruined sprockets will damage the chain. Quote
RollinRhino Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 I usually get a kit of everything at once. It is easier and more economical. Quote
518nyrider Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 chains and sprockets wear together. like everyone else said if you use a new chain with old sprockets it will ruin the chain, and vice versa. Quote
4strokessuck Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 Also, jack up the bike so the swingarm and rear tires hang freely. Wiggle the axle back and forth and up and down checking to see if there is any play where the swingarm meets the frame and where the axle comes out of the carrier. It may be bearing replacement time. Good luck. Quote
Keyser Soze Posted July 15, 2008 Author Report Posted July 15, 2008 Awesome thanks for the advice...Ill have to try that. Quote
flyhighprerunner Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 I agree with 4strokesuck, try that and get back to us! Quote
