Midway USA Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Just purchased a 1996 Banshee. Needed some repairs on the engine and I got that squared away. On to the lighting. The last guy had put some 55 watt Wal-Mart driving lights on it. One was broken off and I removed them without ever testing them. Put some 35 watt sealed beam single filament lights on and wired them to the high beam wires. Needless to say no lights. Where do I need to start? When too high a wattage lights are used does it fry the regulator or stator or both. I'd like to get the lights working but if the cost is too high I can live without them. Thanks in advance for your help. Quote

Midway USA Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 Unhook the lights, and check the yellow stator wire with a test light for voltage. report back. Is that AC or DC voltage at that wire? Quote
Midway USA Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 Unhook the lights, and check the yellow stator wire with a test light for voltage. report back. Unplugged the bullet connectors on the yellow and black stator wires beside the air box. Fired the engine and showed 22 volts up to 35 volts AC depending on RPM. I would assume from this that the regulator is bad? If so is there a better one out there than stock to handle my 35 watt or more watts? Thanks for the reply. Jerry Quote
jbooker82 Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Ricky stator sells one. Ricky Stator Voltage Regulator LINK It is just a universal one but if you tell them that your putting it on a banshee they will put the right bullit conector on the yellow wire so it will plug right in to the blue wire on the stock banshee wireing harness. Then you take the brown wire and ground it to the mounting bolt. You just get a longer metric bolt the same size as stock. The regulator has a hole in the middle just put the bolt through the hole and screw it in to one of the mounting holes for the stock regulator. There regulator is supose to work with stators up to 225 watts wich is plenty. Quote

Snopczynski Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 did you make sure the voltage regulator was there or even plugged in. There is no dc on a banshee, it is all ac voltage. Quote
Midway USA Posted April 9, 2008 Author Report Posted April 9, 2008 (edited) did you make sure the voltage regulator was there or even plugged in. There is no dc on a banshee, it is all ac voltage. Regulator is there and plugged in. The entire wiring harness is intact except the TORS has been removed. I was of the understanding that the votlage regulator was also a rectifier and that it did run DC lighting? Edited April 9, 2008 by Midway USA Quote
Snopczynski Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 ok, you checked the harness and saw the regulator right. So how would a one wire box that grounds through itself convert the voltage to ac? It would have to have at least 3 wires coming out of it, and there would need to be 3 light circuit wires coming out of the stator to run a dc setup. Quote

So how would a one wire box that grounds through itself convert the voltage to ac? It would have to have at least 3 wires coming out of it, and there would need to be 3 light circuit wires coming out of the stator to run a dc setup. I have lights. I called and talked to a guy at Ricky Stator and he got me lined out on how the system worked. He told me that the factory lights are AC but that DC lights would work. He told me to unhook the regulator with the engine idling and see if I had lights. No lights. So according to him the regulator is not bad necessarily. So I'm tinkering with the head light switch and the lights come on. Upon further investigation when the switch was turned on the copper connector between the red/yellow and blue wire would spark and the lights would go off. The diagram shows this to be tail light wiring so now I assume the blue wire going back to the tail light (that is not there) is shorted to the frame. I was told early Banshees didn't have tail lights so I assumed this was one that didn't. Now that I know the wiring is there somewhere I guess I will add a tail light as well. I appreciate the input and sorry I am not up to speed on AC wiring and how it works in this application. I will be on this forum off and on as long as I own this ATV. Thanks!! Quote

I found the blue wire at the back of the ATV. Plugged into the black ground wire!! Got everything fixed and now need to find a cool tail light to put on. I kind of feel like a fool but never looked closely at the wiring in the back because I was under the impression this ATV never had a tail light. Oh well live and learn!! Thanks again for the help. ClimbAnyHill Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 Good read  Glad you found your fix!! I have a stock tailight/brakelight in perfect condition, I also have the rear brake actuator. PM me if you're interested, I don't get email notifications from this forum! Quote

I appreciate the offer but I am going to put one of the rear brake light LED bars accross the back of the six pack rack. Not really worried about brake light at least for now. Just a light that comes on with the headlights. Later. Jerry Quote

Jerry Yeah, all the banshees in the US came with a tailight, only the newer ones had a brake/tailight. Quote
