I have my top end off right now and am thinking about polishing the outside of my cyliders. Is sand blasting them ok or is there a better way?

you can blast the paint off just fine, but its not going to polish it. That is a whole-nuther ball game.

have them blasted with walnut so it takes the paint off but does not pit the metal.

Walnut? I guess I will need some clarification on that. I did not really mean polish to a shine just get the paint off like the first response said.

theshee is saying rather then using sand or beads you use ground up walnuts as your agent it will strip the paint without pitting the metal

yup thats what I meant...

Any reason you're not using Aircraft paint remover to get rid of the paint?

yeah, started to polish my cub this weekend, what a PITA for sure!!!

Its my first time ever doing it so I did not know about aircraft paint remover. Where do you get that at? How are you going about polishing your head?

I've used chem-dip to remove the paint on mine, got a can of it around for cleaning carbs...works great for both. Then I use 400 grit to smooth them up and 500 to shine them before the final polish, they turn out real nice.
