I had the same problem with my '89 it was a pain and I always looked stupid getting push started befor i raced the hill. I took it to the guys at CPI and they found that i was loosing compression. top end rebuild and some major rejetting got the trick done.

By the same problem, do you mean the exact same problem?

to me your prob sounds like the pilot jet. sludge build up in the jet will make it a pain to start and will keep it from idling. I take a piece of wire and run it through the jet. you can also use a torch tip cleaner.

I agree, sounds like something in the pilot circuit. I would step it up a notch on the pilot and make sure the jet and everything else is clean.

How does it run with the choke on, or half choked? Does it idle?

well i got the carbs cleaned and put them back on. air screws 2.5 turns out and it runs alot better now. it will also start with the kickstarter now. it will idle only if the choke is on. how can i fix this? thanks guys

How much compression does it have?

???????^^^^

Does sound like it could be jetting or the crossover tube (Since OP does not know if there is a tube connecting the 2 carbs) Are you even running the stock carbs? However if your running really high/low compression or timing that could be the problem as well.
