I had the bike idling and it was idling high, then as soon as i touched the gas it sounded like a plane taking off, the rpms kept increasing till it sounded like it was maxed and i couldnt turn it off. Tried the switch, and yanking both plug wires, it kept going. As soon as i pulled the choke it turned right off. Then i started it back up a minute later and it was fine, still idling a little high though but not like before. Then a little later it did it again! This time i again tried the switch and nothing but i knew the choke would kill it and sure enough it did. The bike is really sluggish in the midrange aswell. The weather today was also very cold, it was maybe 20 degrees. Can that cause any of this? Normally i wouldent even ride on a day like this but a few friends managed to talk me into it.

Air leak...

It's getting so hot it no longer needs the spark plugs to ignite the mixture....

When it cools down....it only has to be run to heat back up and start it all over again.

Tear it apart and check it now before it breaks something....trust me on that.

Look for obvious places like the intakes, boost bottle if you have one, etc...could be cracked/old rubber.

Could also be a stuck throttle cable (although it'd do it more often than just once in a while and when it was warmed up most likely...), clogged passage or dirt in the carb....

Normally, if the throttle cable was sticking, killing it with the switch would shut it off.

When it's detonating, it's not using the ignition spark....so the kill switch is nothing, it's not running off the plug anywho...

My bike just did that and I couldn't understand what was going on. After doing some searching on this wonderful site, I thought "air leak". Took a propane torch and turned it on ever so slightly, started up the bike and let it idle. I ran the propane around the carbs and boots then the idle went up near the left boot. Took the boot off and it had a small tear in it. I would have never thought that such a small tear could do that, but it is running fine now. One of the many mysteries of the wonderful two stroke I guess..

that idea with the propane torch is possibbley the best idea i have hered for finding an airleak. good call bub

ive had weedwackers detonate before. i ran em regardless untill they..... detonated.

like dajog said. tear it apart... check your compression first to see how far you have to go inside. try the propane trick. if your lucky the leak will be on the outside and not in the actual motor.

I had the same thing happen to me. When it started up at first it was fine, but after riding for a few mins it wouldn't idle down. It turned out being a cracked intake boot. Good ole boost bottle took the blame for that one! I vote air leak....
