Swaie Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Is it best to break in a fresh rebuild on stock timing or +4? When I say rebuild I mean, new crank, rods, pistons. My mods are in my sig. Quote
Bansh-eman Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 please use the search, this has been covered alot and it was actually covered like 2 weeks ago again Quote
hollisatp Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 yeah, ya know.... I totally understand when people get upset about using the search opton... but I am in the same boat, new motor, need some info... I tried the search under a bunch of diff wordings... just came back with a bunch of crap.. maybe we need more stickies?? or someone can weed through the bad post and save the good ones in an archive somewhere? My 2c. Quote
. Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 honda makes a 2 stroke oil that is non synthetic, it is best to use because it will help seat the rings better. Start her up, vary throttle not abover 1/4 throttle for 15 minutes or so (until jugs get pretty warm), and then let it cool. Start again and vary throttle 1/4 to 1/2 throttle for another 15 minutes (you'll feel as far as engine wants to go in rpm band, dont push it past where it wants to go), let it cool Check torque on head and cylinders start and let warm up, and then ride in 1st gear varying throttle and again dont push engine to far, for 15 minutes, and then let cool start and let warm up, ride around 1st and 2nd gear, pushing engine as far as it wants to go (powerband should start coming on a little) for about 30 minutes, let cool. Check torque again Keep riding for 30-45 minutes or so in cycles until engine is really coming on. You'll go through about 5 gallons of gas before engine completely breaks in, then switch to the 2 stroke oil you want to use. Main thing you want to remember is to vary your throttle and not keep it constant for a period of time when your first starting out. I've always gotten good strong engines from doing it this way. Hilarious Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Break it in on whatever timing you plan on running with the engine. Its seating your rings upon break in that you want to be careful. Quote
XxMeltIcexX Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I break in my engines they way I ride them, balls to the wall. That is after I do my warmup cycles and a few half throttle trips... Everyone has their own way man, thats why the search IS the best option, cause there is alot of ideas/opinions. Good Luck Eric Quote

My 2c. I actually made this suggestion that we have the admin or mods re-do all the info threads and lock them so they dont get gummed up with bullshit. and sticky them at the tops. that way all the common questions are all there and there isnt a ton of crap that people have responded with. it would be some work but nce it was finished it would be very nice Quote
Swaie Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the useful info. Use search needed a straight answer. Too much crap popped up so I asked, thanks again for the info. And since we are going to make this a thread about searching, Half the time search doesn't work is that my computer or what? Bansh-eman Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 it depends on which error u get Quote
hollisatp Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 so a question... can I jack the back wheels up and do this or does it have to ba on the ground? 5 gallons of gas seems like alot? Will I be able to feel the motor changing as it is breaking in? Quote
docjcwatson Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 The most important part of the break-in is to get the rings to set. The best way that I have researched this is to ride the bike around as many city blocks as you can, here's why; The highpowered shifting/full throttle that you are going to do on the straights is what the rings need to set properly. Then you see a corner up ahead, let off the throttle, and USE THE TRANS. to slow you down by downshifting, to roll into the turn. Using the breaks to much will, also, not set the rings right. This should be done for 15 mins. Let the bike COMPLETELY cool down, before going for another go. Repeat it 3 times and change your oil. - Doc Quote
