How Reliable?

How reliable are stock banshees? How many hours should I be able to get out of it before rebuild?

im the 2nd owner of my shee, i got it off my buddy i went to grade school with for 12 years so i know the history of the bike.

 

when i purchased it, he said the only thing he replaced in the motor were the rings on each piston.

 

see where ever he wrecked the bike he just bought it to the yamaha dealer and got everything done by them. so he said what the heck and told them to throw in some new sets of rings. so really, they didnt even need to be changed. just done it anyway. he rolling in money so it wasnt hurting him.

 

and my shee has pipes jetted, an a air filter.

 

so its not that stock. just shows how long it can go before a rebuild i guess.

 

ps: shes still running on the same pistons since 2003.

Since you're in SW MI, I assume you're gonna be hitting the dunes. A lot of WOT throttle riding with harder loads on it (deep sand = more load on the motor) it'll probably need a top end freshened up a little quicker than someone riding trails and not WOT all the time (Wide Open Throttle)

 

With proper air filter maintenance...correct jetting (since we have all 4 seasons here in MI, that's critical. It gets COLD over on the West Coast) and quality two stroke oil mixed at a reasonable ratio (I prefer 32:1, but that's a whole other topic...) you'll get years out of it if you average a few weekends of riding a month.

 

I think people have a misconception once you start building them they start to get unreliable. You just push the motor harder when you go bigger...

most ppl assume that since we wrench on these things alot there unreliable.. but truth be known.. we not rebiulding all the time were just upgrading.. it tends to happen alot...

banshees are reliable, theres no doubt about that. it all depends on how the owner takes care of it. of course harder riding wears parts down, but proper maintenance between rides sure helps to prolong that. banshees sure have a lot less moving parts than 4 strokes making them cheaper and easier to work on as far as im concerned.

For an owner who knows how to maintain the bike and know how two strokes work, very reliable. For others who have no clue, not so reliable. All the rebuilds we have done are because of people we let ride our shee with lack of skill in both the care of the machine and how to properly ride it.
