I saw djackbanshee's motor in another topic and realized I dont know crap about crankers and there are probably a couple others out there like me. So if everyone could give some info about what all parts you have to get to make it run, ballpark prices and things like that I would do the happy dance.

If you have enough money to build one, skip the idea and build a big stroker banshee engine. More reliable, parts are more avilable, etc.

Its basically a snomobile crank/cylinders/cases welded to the front of a set of banshee cases. PM majicmike, he has one as well.

Id take a cranker any day.... Mikes cranker is a beast. PM mike or get a hold of Kim at K&T, he does more with crankers then anybody.

Crankers run all pissed off and are fast but like BigRed said If you can afford to build a cranker, you can afford to build a more reliable big stroker banshee w/o all the cutting and welding on your cases.

Majicmikes cranker was running the same speeds at walden as an 18mil banshee. K&T has one that ran 86mph up sand mountain. Crankers friggin move out.

There were bikes up in the mid 80's easter weekend quite a few times. The stock cases simply aren't meant to handle that kind of power and stuff will break. Mattoon makes a set of cases now that you can bolt your 800+cc snowmobile cylinders to and drop in your crank. That would be the way to go.

They look neat, but its old technology IMO. I'd much rather have a billet cylinder 20mil on a set of mattoon cases. K&T's triple was just barely catching LC Performance's 20mil at the top of the hill easter weekend.

I'm not saying they aren't impressive, because they are. Its a feat all in itself just to do the welding and keep everything straight. I wouldn't want to try and imagine the heat distortion on some of the areas of the cases while they weld the snowmobile front half on.

If money wasn't an object, I'd have a caracal cylinder...they're unreal.

However...I'd like to get a hold of a 20mil DM cylinder.... A little more affordable, that's for sure....

It's a ton of work to get the cranker to fit...

Honestly...I'd like to see people start putting more effort into turbo big 4 stroke motors.

Tyson's 450 YFZ is bad ass...I'd like to see that on a new 700 raptor....

Like this set up on a raptor 700? This guy is from colorado, nice set up he has.

Cranker's, in general, have a nasty habit of cracking their pipes. :geek:

Thats what I am going to do this week. take my pipes to the shop and weld, both where broke. Also a cranker is a huge amount of maintance. you have to tighten every nut bolt and what not after every weekend. The list of stuff I had to do after one weekend.

Replaced the backing plate and cushins

replaced the inner outer hubs

replaced the lock up

replaced the clutch

replaced out put shaft nut and washer

need to weld both pipes

need to weld my fuel tank

needed to jb weld my left carb brcause they where bored to 41.5 and cracked around the inlet and had a small leak ( found that because I am anal about keeping things clean)

remount my plastics becuase it ratelled every nut and bolt out and the plastics fell off

Also we call it leakenstine becuase the dam thing leaks fluids you did not even know it had.

Some of the repairs where not all from one weekend and my be from a longer period of time but thats the mataince you have with these things. You can see vidio of it on my myspace page the link is below. I was racing a 480 YFZ with a 20hp shot of nos and he was spraying.

It is better to find a used one then to build one due to the $10,000 price tag to build one. I was able to get mine for right about $8500 for the bike and all. Thats after I bought other stuff for it.

sorry for the sloppy spelling iI need to go back to the 5th grade LOL

the purpose and advantage of running cranker motors is the tourque they produce you can gear bigger which then can run bigger rollout and paddle which equals more ground coverage faster, now the tourque is also what makes these motors suck on the maintanince side,,keeping these things together from blowin head gaskets bolts ,studs and rotoary grears is another thing,,and 640 motors its hard finding pistons!

This is why I never built myself a Cranker, or bought one. I believe one of Dave's friends shared 101 reasons why I should do something else.

while we are on the subject of wild and crazy engines, hows the triple comming along? Sorry to steal the thread...

If I'm not mistaken, he sold the triple and it's design...
