RoostRocket Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 hey guys i just picked up a yz250 for next to nothing and the reason is that its hard to start. when you kick it over the crank turns and it gets spark and it feels like it has good compression but it only kicks over after like 5 min. of kicking the shit out of it. the previous owner was trying to kick it over with no filter on at all could that have fucked it up? any help would be much appreciated. Sounds like not enough choke/fuel or low compression. Quote
RoostRocket Posted May 18, 2007 Author Report Posted May 18, 2007 no filter would make it harder to start. Sounds like not enough choke/fuel or low compression. im going to put it back together tomorrow and get the filter from him. if the filter was off why would it make it hard to start ? just cuz its getting too much air? thanks. ill get the filter on and see what happens. badassbanshee479 Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 (edited) first do a compression test, then clean the carb and install the filter. Sounds like the pilot jet is clogged or the wrong size. Also check and see where the air screw is set at. should be on the left side of the carb by the bowl, towards the rear of the carb. Set it at about 1.5 turns out from lightly seated. is there anything done to the bike? pipe reeds etc.... Edited May 18, 2007 by badassbanshee479 Quote
RagunCajun Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 You must have some strong legs to kick it over for 5 minutes. 1 kick on my yz250 wears me out Like he said, do a compression test. That is a must. Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 A friend has a KX250 and after 5 kicks you go have a beer then try it again. Try to shoot a little carb cleaner in the carb and kick it over. If it fires or starts than you have a fuel issue on the low end. Pilot jet or start(choke) jet. Quote
letsgetthisdone Posted May 19, 2007 Report Posted May 19, 2007 you could have bad and/or broken reeds. THat would make it very hard to start. Oryour pilot cjet is clogged. How many hours are on the top-end? Quote
RoostRocket Posted May 19, 2007 Author Report Posted May 19, 2007 thanks for all the help guys im not sure how many hours are on the top end but its supposed to be pretty fresh from what i was told. i still have to get the carb off and clean the jets i try all the tips you guys gave me and report but i just got my a arms from 2003limitedbanshee and gotta get that together real quick so the 250s on the back burner for a couple days. thanks again and ill let you guys know what happens.
