Bansh-eman Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 those grooves look pretty bad... although i disagree with blowit ... i will say your chancing it takin off that much... from your first post i was assuming your baskets was barley nicked... and filing it would have been fine... if you cant afford a billet try to get someones stock they got laying around... blowit Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Mines been that way for 6 years atleast. Ive rebuilt the engine several times and been through several clutches and havent had any problems. and best of luck to you. We just will not do it to a customer bike. The same as saying " i only put a 1/2 quart of oil in but it has not blown up", super, but we don;t gamble on other people's investments so simply conveying this. Do what you wish, but don't ask us to do it. Brandon Quote
fastrthnu Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 I just hooked up from theshee and got a replacement till I can get a billet one in a few weeks. I figured it wasnt worth saving,. but wasnt sure. Quote
dawarriorman Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 (edited) Listen to what blowit is saying people. Theres a right way to fix this, and a wrong (ghetto way). Sure it might work fine for you, but it is a FACT you won't remove material perfectly even. You're human. Grooves in the basket for a little while longer until you can afford a new basket isn't going to hurt anything. Sure it might be annoying, but thats it. You start filing on the basket, and then there IS a chance you could screw something up. I've heard of it, you have first hand experience from someone else that has seen it happen. Why take a chance? Im sure theres plenty of people that have played russian roulette and lived, but that doesn't mean its safe. Just because something is the quick and easy way to go,doesn't mean its the best course of action. Edit: Half the reason this is a good forum is because people will tell you the right way to do things. Quit trying to talk people into half assing things. Edited April 12, 2007 by dawarriorman Quote
Wallrat Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 I agree. Fix shit while its cheap, a rebuild costs WAY more. Here's a better pic: Quote
fastrthnu Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 do those billet baskets come with that gear on the back,. or do I have to save my old one? Before I throw it away. Quote

fastrthnu Posted April 13, 2007 Author Report Posted April 13, 2007 you have to save the gear k, dumb question #2,... if I have to save that gear how the hell do you get it off and put it back on the new one? Quote
dajogejr Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Grind the head off the rivets holding it on, on the basket side. I used an air chisel with a pointy bit to push 'em out. A drill could be used, too...I suppose. Quote
theshee Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Grind them, its the easiest way. I tried to drill one and it was a bitch. Way easier to grind them and punch em out. Quote

theshee Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 I really dont know.... I took mine apart for the inside gear, and switched to straight cuts and a billet basket. Maybe the Yamaha dealer could rivet it back for you? I really dont know. Quote
dajogejr Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 If you're gonna take the gear off, put it on a new basket. I can't imagine a stock OEM basket from the dealer being much cheaper than an aftermarket billet basket. After market billet baskets come with tapered allen head bolts, you use RED Loctite to fasten them in. Quote
theshee Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 I sold him a stock basket.... really really cheap. Thats why he needs to get it riveted back together. Quote
dajogejr Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 OH...got it. I would try to grind the head off the rivets on the old one, and drill/tap the hole for the new OEM basket. Good luck! Quote
