BansheeKid15 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Hey quick question, can you powdercoat the stock a arms? Im getting my whole frame done and i was wondering if i would be able to. I dont know if there is plastic inside, but im a little worried about the rubber boot... i would hate to get them back and not be able to use them :: Quote
kaotik1 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Answer your question in simple form NO! There is a teflon ring inside the ball joint that will burn up and you will have a puddle of poop on your hands... Quote
theshee Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 If you want to redo your stock a-arms as majicmike what paint he used on his daughters YFZ frame and a-arms. I thought they were powdercoated when I saw them, looks great. You can see it in the images section, under a topic called, all in a weekends work. Quote

PM diesel1 on P.S. he can do it.... this is the only pic I have and it was really just done as a color sample but he can do it Quote
okbeast Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 Yeah all I had ever heard was that you can't, but then I had a buddy that did all 4 of his stockers and they came out fine, just taped off the balljoint and everything after taking the boot off and cleaning all the grease out they could. Maybe the plastic that's inside there really doesn't melt and the temps needed to bake the PC... Quote
Duner440 Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 I have had two sets of stock a-arms done. I didnt know that they have that inside the ball joint but it definitly melted. I wondered why on my last set the ball joints were loose. That kinda makes me feel stupid! :shoothead: Quote
bigboybanshee Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 I think the people that are successfully PC'ing the stock arms are using the infrared curing lamps and not sticking the parts in an oven. Quote

BansheeKid15 Posted February 24, 2007 Author Report Posted February 24, 2007 LOL, thats what i figured, thanks for the replies guys. I have decided to POR-15 the a arms, its the closest thing to powdercoat, but you brush it on. One more question, for those of you who have pc'ed your frame (where the steering stem connects) and hubs... how do you go about removing the rubber inside them? it looks like it would be pretty straight foward but i dont want to try it and damage something. Theshee, i will pm majicmike because i also saw the YFZ frame and really liked his work. Quote
okbeast Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 Do these curing lamps work as good as an oven for curing the PC? Quote
yfzdunejumper Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 the rubber rings are just seals you can pry them out with a screwdriver but you will NEED to take the bearings out before you pc them or the grease in the bearings will ruin th pc. the hubs are easy get a socket a little smaller than the hole and knock them out. the stem bearing is a little more tricky theres a weird nut in there that will have to come out. I took one out the other day and I took a 3/4 inch bolt and welded a nut on it so I could impact it off. if you don't have access to a welder I could send you the bolt I made. you really need to take that bearing out. its easy with the right tools. The lamps work just as good as an oven if you know how to do it. The big problem is it takes forever to do a large item. Quote
okbeast Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 I know everyone says it can't be done but I've seen 1st-hand that it can, or at least it worked in this case so who knows Quote
