water side faces the impeller

That's how the Yamaha service manual shows it as well. Water side facing the impeller. Be sure to use a new gasket while you have it apart.

i hope you didnt trash your old seal... if you did you can use a socket but the new seal is a mother fuker to get to seat all the way... get some assembly grease and lube her up before sliding it in...

i did trash my old seal,it was putting water in my tranny, and i had it right w the water side to the impeller,i mean what else could it be?cuz the seal was i a little chipped, when i pulled it out.so i figure it had to be the seal.the o-ring on the aluminum hose that goes, from the case to the side case is new,i dont think thats leeking,i think what happen is i forced the seal, and i chipped it with out realizing it.any other suggestions on what could be putting water on my tranny?thanks. :whistling: :banghead: :shoothead:

if water is getting into your tranny, that seal is the only way...well take that back... the metal part where your water goes through the cover can leak down if its not tight but i havent seen that happen before.

id say try another seal... make sure the seal is flush to the cover.. my first one stuck out a very small amount so i ripped it out and got a new one... use some assembly grease before you pout it in and put a socket on seal and tap it down in there... its a pain in the ass to do casue its a really tight fit! but it will go all the way down flush. if not oyou will leak by.

its not that bad... you can get it in using a socket and a small hammer.... its just a tight fit... make sure you use a socket that covers the whole seal so you dont bust the rubber in the center..
