ZillaRider02 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'm running on open air box now with the Pro-Design set up and a Uni filter. I've got T-5's, Noss Head w/18cc domes, V-Force 3 reeds, F.A.S.T. dune port, +4 timing, stock carbs with TORS removed, and an MSD coil. I ordered a pair of K&N Clamp on filters w/outerwears to replace my airbox, but can't decide if it is worth it or not. I don't ride mud or water, so that is not a factor. Is there really that much difference in power? Quote
Bansh88 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 (edited) forget about power gains. 1. You get to remove the airbox. You bike will look cleaner, be more open. 3. You also will 86 the coolant resevoir. 1 less thing on your bike to deal with. 2. Airbox fills with sand and muck. Your filters will stay much cleaner without the box. like my # sequence? dajogejr Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I agree...ditch the airbox if mud and water aren't concerns. Even if it gives the exact same performance (which, it will increase a bit) it is sooo much cleaner and easier to work on. NO more fighting w/ boots and airbox for any carb tuning, etc... Quote
Yamahammer Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 ill play the other side of the fence. I hate them the are alway getting full of sand especially if some dumb ass rosot the hell out of you from the side. You have to clean them every ride even with outer wears they burn on the pipes you have to rotate them in and zip tie them together so forth. yes it does remove the coolant bottle and air box makes it look cleaner some, but now the wires are right there next to the pipes if they contact it they will melt and then youre screwed.I does make it alittle easier for carb tunning but if you have the tors removed its close to the same. also now all the weight of the carb and filter are resting on the intake putting more strain on it so it will probably fail sooner. If you run the plug removed from the bottom of the stock air box it does not get sand inside very minimal so you can go a couple of rides with out cleaning filter just clean out the air box. I hate having to carry an extra set of filters ready to go incast the others get clogged. that about sums up my .02 and i know i will get bashed Quote
Toomey Banshee Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Ive had both on the 99. Its stock with T-5's, v-force and a cool head with 20cc domes. I put pods on at the beginning of this riding season and jetted accordingly. I noticed a pretty decent performance gain and like what was said before the carbs are much easier to work on, jetting, syncing etc. If all you ride is sand then you made the right choice going to pods. Just run outerwears and clean them every ride or 2, you'll be fine. Quote
differentstrokes Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'm switching from a clamp on back to an airbox, but I ride in alot nastier stuff here in the South. An airbox just seems to work better for me since I ride trails, sometimes you don't have time to think about going around something if you ride aggressive... when in doubt I gas it! The only positives I see with clamp on's are easier tuning and a little more airflow. IMO you wouldn't be having second thoughts if there wasn't a reason to be concerned. Quote

I have Shearer pipes, they go up and over the filters/carbs. No worries there. I cleaned up my wiring considerably, using plastic flex automotive style tub and zip ties... Some pipes just don't clear the outerwears...I hear ya. They make bigger, angled outerwears, have you though about checking out some of them?? Yep, when buds and I play roost wars, it gets bad, I agree there. Quote
differentstrokes Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I forgot to mention that when I ran stock carbs with clamp on's I also had to cut the airbox supports from the frame since they rubbed holes in my outerwears, I know that's a pretty common problem with them unless you have the angled filters. ZillaRider02 Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 Thanks for all the reply's. I already have the coolant bottle gone, and all of the factory mounting tabs for the airbox are gone too! It's a toss up, IMO. The bike already run's hard and is low maintanance as it is now...... Anybody else? Quote
kubiac3 Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 Clamp ons. Got em and love em. I dont clean em every ride either, I clean em about every 5 rides. Never had a problem with them clogging. Even rode in some nasty ass mud once and didnt have problems with them either. The only problem I had with them is once fell off once and I never found it. Just buy 2 sets just in case. You will end up using the spare set in the long run and then just keep the old set in your tool box in case you loose one. It has only happened once and it was probably because I forgot to tighten it down and got antsy to ride instead of double checking little things like that. Quote
J-Madd Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 I've had both on the same motor, and I honestly could't tell much difference in power. Even with the airbox on, you can still get the filter wet if you hit a big puddle. I have an airbox on my '99 and pods on my '06. Quote
ZillaRider02 Posted November 14, 2006 Author Report Posted November 14, 2006 Thanks for the info guys, I've decided to keep the airbox. The clamp-on's are for posted in the for sale section. Quote
ClimbAnyHill Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 I currently run the open lid airbox with K&N & Pro Flo adapter plate. I'll gladly trade that for a pair of bolt on K&N's.. I have stock carbs. Quote
