the skin doctor Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 i have recently bought a 1995 yamaha banshee and was running fine but has since started missing.i changed the plugs to ngk b8es and it made run better for an hour or so. this morning i went out for a couple of hours and now there is excessive coming out of the right tail pipe{throttle side} along with alot of oil at the end of the silencer.it also is missing worse. could my bike need rings on that side of the head?i know if i do one i'm going to do both sides.the guy i bought it from said they were done a year ago but that seems a little long to me. should i go ahead and replace the pistons also? is there some other stuff i could do while i have the head off to make this atv faster than it already is? i hope someone else can help me on this ........you can also email me at theskin [email protected].......... once again thank you Quote
platinumjason Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Chances are if its smoking bad on the right side and oil is coming out of it then you have a bad crankseal. You also said you recently bought it? You get a good deal on it? You will have to split the cases to change that seal if that is whats wrong, chances are the previous owner knew this and thats why he sold it. Quote

jbooker82 Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 There is no oil where the crank runs. The rings being shot has nothing to do with the excessiv smoking. The transmission side of the crank is on the RH side. The oil you check with the dipstick is for the tranny only. It lubes nothing in the engine. There is a seal on the crank to keep that oil out. It goes bad and starts letting oil in to the engine. The excessive smoke on the RH exhaust is from buring trans oil. Maybe you just didnt see the excessive cloud of smoke out one pipe because it was mixed at 24:1. when you cut down the oil mixture to 40:1, Then the LH side cleared up and wasnt foging smoke out the pipe.
