Hey guys

I raced a lot this last weekend and while racing I was getting from 6th to 1st gear all at once. After doing this for a while I wouldn't shift to lower gear any more, just the first time. So, if I was on 5th it would shift only to 4th but no any other lower gear. After a few tries I figured out the problem: When shifting down the shift lever was not springing back to the normal position.

Temporary solution: Before every time I want to shift down I have to pull the lever up.

Any idea what the real problem is and how I can fix it?

I betcha your shift linkage mechanism that grabs your shift star is worn out. At least the springs anyway. Get a new one of those... You will need to remove your clutch basket to get to it though.

I had a similiar problem with the shift lever getting stuck, sometimes only in 2nd & 3rd. I replaced the shift lever return spring and problema corrected. It ran about $4 bucks. You're gonna have to remove the clutches to get to it though.

i just had this problem, pop of your clutch basket and make sure your shift shaft is adjusted correct. i dont know the tech terms here but there should be equal spacing on the top and bottom. them come out of adjustment over time. if you go to a local shop they should know what you are talking about. i cant explain in on here but its not really hard. while you have that stuff out you may as well get a moded shift star also. any good shop that deals with banshees should know by looking once you remove the basket what is going on. maybe an hour of labor and 20 bucks or so for the shiftstar. just dont go to a dealership. good luck

Baddshee, Red, Bansh-eman all have great suggestions. You can buy all the shifting components(excluding shifter) for around $50 oem. These parts will wear out after a million shifts. Might as well change them all and be shifting like new again. The adjuster Izericson is speaking of is eccentric like a roundhouse(or Honda style) carrier. Just turn it and look real close, you will see how it works.

I agree, if its worn chances are that everything is worn and should just be replaced. When mine started acting gay I put in a new excentric screw, washer, lock washer, and the whole shifter mechanism. Fixed everything.

Mod your shift star while you are in there.

Thank you guys, seems like is something very common. The thing is that I only have about 40 hours on it and I had another banshee before and the same deal happened to it but it was not this serious... must me something wrong with my shifting habits that makes this problem worse, any idea what habits would help to agravate this problem??

Once you are in there you may just see that the adjuster lock nut came loose or something like that. One thing that I have had problems a few times w/is the shift shaft. The part that contacts the shift star to turn it will get loose side to side. It should only pivot up and down, no slop side to side. I don't want to confuse you so before you go worrying about this, just take a look.

As far as being hard on the shifter, do you drag race a lot. Some people get all excited and slam the piss out of the shifter to make sure they get a good shift :baseball_innocent:
