ssanddemon Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 Whoever said you can't weld the cases is a nitwit- half the older shees out there have welded cases from chain breakage or crash damage. JB works really well IF you can get the metal really clean before applying. If you are in a hurry or otherwise don't want to get into the motor, you can scrape and grind away the old JB and apply some more. Of course the best way to do this on a lower case is to pull the motor and flip it over. Otherwise oil is going to dribble out into the crack which is probably why it is leaking now. For all the work involved, you might as well tear the motor down and get it welded and be done with it. Quote
racer Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 you can weld that aluminum but its hard and takes a very skilled TIG welder. the reason being, its shit. thats cast aluminum pot metal thats chock full of impuritites, hence the funky color. Quote
cdwood37 Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 Yep welding this kind of pot aluminum sucks but i do it all the time at my shop. Any tig welding shop should be able to do it. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done cause it can, and don't let them do a crappy job and tell you thats just the way it comes out, you should get it back with a nice little bead on it for no more than 100 buck its really a 1 hour job. Is that the going rate $100/hour? Around here (Michigan) it is around $55-$75/hour. Recently I had an Arctic Cat Tripple motormount welded up adn re-machined back to stock shape for $65 or $55 I can;t remember. If you really want to save money and you are close to a community college that has welding classes you could call the instructor or just pop in there. The intstructor may do it right there for free as a demonstration to some students. If it is an advanced class he may want a student to do it, but he shoudl supervise, so you should be fine. That way would most likely work, but would be a pain. Quote
cdwood37 Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 Ok no the going rate here is 65 an hour for aluminum, But you will be charged about one hundred ragardless if it takes an hour. There are certain things that don't take that long to do such as this and its not worth the time it takes to do all the paperwork and preperation for just 65 bucks. Thats why I am saying it will be at least 100 bucks, maybe more if there is only one or two shops close to you. Quote
