GleasmJA Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 Well here is the story. This winter i broke down the shee and PC'd the frame got new a arms, shocks and what not. Got it back together today and i runs fine. Only problem, no headlights or tail light. What do you think the problem could be. Put in a RS timing plate, but it runs fine so i don't think that it is that.... thanks for the info. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 17, 2006 Author Report Posted April 17, 2006 One thing i had thought of.... i removed all the tors wires from the harness... just thought that might help. Quote
steveodo Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 first i would check the bulbs ,my stater went bad an fried all my bulbs. or make sure the voltage regulater is grounded. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 17, 2006 Author Report Posted April 17, 2006 thanks... going to check the bulbs in the morning. I didn't think it would fry all the bulbs at once.... but know i have heard of it, so i'll check them Quote
Capone Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 Make sure your voltage regulator back by your CDI is hooked up, and hooked up right, make sure you didn't plug the wires in opposite spots. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 17, 2006 Author Report Posted April 17, 2006 Checked the bulbs...at least two out of three.. the brake light and one headlight. Both work. Checked that the stator is putting some power out, and it is right at the two plugs on top of the motor. But still no lights. So i think my voltage regulator took a shit. WHat do you think. All the conections are correct as far as i can trace them out. But with the stator putting out power that leads me to beleive that the regulator isn't working, Correct?? Quote
bigboybanshee Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 Make sure your ground connections are solid too. When I say solid, I mean touching metal, not PC... Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 17, 2006 Author Report Posted April 17, 2006 Yeah.... they are good. Checked that also.. Even removed the paint off the back of the voltage regulator that i painted. Still no go. Dielectric greased the whole grounding conection. Nothing changed. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 18, 2006 Author Report Posted April 18, 2006 No new ideas.... i've got a voltage regulator coming so i hope that is the problem. Quote
K5Banshee Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 Well, when my voltage reg went bad, it fried my bulbs.... I put a meter on the front headlight connection to check voltage. It was good at idle, but as soon as I revved the motor the voltage shot up.....much higher than 12V. I believe all the regulator does is shunt some of the power at the higher RPM's to keep voltage constant If it went bad, it should blow your bulbs out..... Have you checked the voltage at the bulbs with the motor running? Maybe you have a bad wire in the headlight circuit? or a bad switch? I would check voltage at the lights first, then at the switch to make sure there is not an open connection anywhere. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 18, 2006 Author Report Posted April 18, 2006 I checked voltage at the headlight and tailight... Not a thing. I think that my regulator is just shunting it all to ground. When i checked it at the conectors right off the stator... it did the jumping as RPMs went up. But it should, that's what the voltage regulator is for. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 Question.... is the stator that controls the lights... yellow and black.. suppose to be grounded together?? I think i have found my problem if that isn't suppose to be like that. If not... back to chasing wires... again Quote
K5Banshee Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 NO! the black is ground, and the yellow is the 12V power...really is the 12+++ power until you get a reg on it. Here's a wiring diagram. (about halfway down the page) http://www.dunereview.com/electricalupgrade-1.htm Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 Got the diagram.... just trying to confirm. I didn't think so... but with it bolted up and all... testing from the black and yellow at the top of the motor... electrically the same point. Or grounded together... i will further investigate... but got to be somewhere else at the moment. Update later. Thanks. Quote
GleasmJA Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 (edited) OK... with the stator completely off the shee... off from the timing plate. I have a short between the yellow wire and the center of the stator. That shouldn't be correct? Please help with any inputs. Just talked to RS about that stator... they confirm that the yellow and black from the stator are shorted... or electrically the same point... so back to the hunt for the problem with my lights.
