avc8130 Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I was kicking tires on my 2000 Banshee and I noticed my rear hubs move quite a bit on the splines. I tried tightening the nut but it wouldn't get over to the next cotter pin hole to get it tight. Is it normal for the hubs to giggle a bit? ac Quote
Wicked98Shee Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 no ur rear hubs should be tight, ya may need to use a 3/4 drive breaker bar to get that next slot in the castle nut. if i remember right the torque for it is like 70 or 80 ft pounds. Quote
Wallrat Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Nope that's not normal. Your splines are worn - probably due to a loose castle nut. Pull that hub and see if the hub splines are worn or (worse), the axle splines are worn. You can temporarily fix worn splines w/ a little aluminum foil wrapped around the splines. Quote

You can also put a grade 8 washer between your nut and the hub to get it a little tighter if you need, but don't have any room to tighten the nut any more. I'm not sure how the teflon tape holds up over time, I've just seen it done in the past as a quick fix. Quote
avc8130 Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 Oh no! This isnt good! Both sides of my baby are like that. So I guess the best idea is to wrap up some aluminum foil and then try to really tighten those castle nuts down. I will try this tonight or tomorrow night. Thanks, ac Quote
Wicked98Shee Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 OOooo so u are runnin outta threads on the axle? i thought ya meant just gettting it tight enough lol my bad Quote
avc8130 Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 Well, here is what I noticed. Bought the quad used from someone who I know wouldn't touch it himself. Heck, I have receipts for a crank case oil change at the dealer! I was adjusting the chain and noticed that both my rear tires will turn a little bit without the axle turning. There is play between the hubs and the axle. The axle nuts are loose, is I can rock them by hand. I took the cotter pin out and tried to tighten them. They bottomed out and would not tighten far enough to allow me to get the cotter pin back in. The nuts aren't specific to one side or the other, ie the threads only line up 1 way? Any ideas/suggestions? ac Quote
Wallrat Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Pull the hubs and check out the splines. Chances are if it was ridden w/ loose bolts those splines are trashed. Quote
avc8130 Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Ok, went out there with the 3/4 drive ratchet and a huge pipe. Cranked those bad boys down. She aint moving now! ac Quote
