RNBRAD Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Just curious as to any ill effects from chroming them? Anything to watch out for? Quote
race-a-holic Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Believe it or not.If you'll use mother's polish or something similar, the tie rod itself actually shines up really good. Not chrome but looks alot better than it did. Quote

Not much to choose from though. Scott had a set on his shee but then I've heard they have really long studds on them that need trimmed and they are also made by american star, which I'm skeptical on some of their products. The rubber boots won't effect the chroming process, they can stay on there, I'm just wondering if I can seal the lip enough with tape to keep the chromium solution out of the joint. If not it may add plating to the inside of them tie rod joint, which I don't want. Sometimes things are just more a PITA than their worth and I like to find that out before I start it. I can't polish them like I want to or I'm sure they would rust. Quote
sandman Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 The rubbers are removable as are the rubbers on the stock a arms. I had all mine chromed on my old bike (tie rod ends & a arms). Ill effects... takes all the grease out of the joint which is even more of an issue with the a arms due to the extra stress on those. I had 1990 A (J) arms that were chromed in 1999 & in 2005 one of my lower a arm ball joints ripped out of the a arm during a 30 mph roll across the sand. This resulted in a torn MCL & a 2005 banshee sitting in my garage. I will never chrome anything with a ball joint attached to it again as I feel when you remove all the grease from a joint it will accelerate the wear considerably. I'm going to run my stock painted A arms this coming year than upgrade to some quicksands next winter. As far as tie rods go, I would chrome the rod & polish the end or just leave it the way it is. Better safe than sorry as I've learned the hard way. old tie rod, the one that is not bent. Quote
