back in the late 60's early 70's the southern california desert races drew in racers from all over. as many as 3000 guys would start in a single race. guys like J.N ROBERTS, MALCOM SMITH, MIKE MCCOY. among hundreds of annomous riders.the little guy just out for a sunday ride to teams of serious die hard racers. now here it is 2005 and the last race i was at there was 100 people entered in 8 different classes?

where has the passion and dedication gone. where did all the guys that want to race go? the second half of the california desert racing season is starting next sunday october 16th at superstition mountain..just 90 mins east of down town san diego. and even though we saw numbers rise slightly in the first half it still dosnt show the prommise that our sport is comming back to life.

is it the fact now all the new bikes are built for the mx track? and is track riding realy taking off that big and fast that all the new bikes have to be designed for track use? take for example the banshee..yeah there are many design flaws.things like the fact that its front heavy and the low end just isnt there.but at the same time its a comfortable bike and the average joe can ride it and feel safe on it. then you have the new 450's they are all designed for mx tracks and modeled after a motorcycle.the seating is high and the bars are low. do that many people realy ride mx tracks on quads these days and if they do then where is the quad supercross? i know that here in san diego there are no tracks that even allow quads. the closest one is almost a 2 hour drive. the lake elsinor track has a small quad track that realy isnt fun.its almost like they built it just because there was an extra 1 acre lot and they had some extra dirt from the mx tracks. its small tight and no place to realy get the quad opened up like it was ment to be.

with 2006 said to be the last year of the banshee what does this mean for the future of our sport? are all sport quads now going to be geared for the mx tracks?and why is it that they are going this rout anyway. have you been to glamis on a holliday weekend? take presedents day for example. over a million people take to the desert of southern california..and how many do you see at the track? ow many people from the middle and eastern edge of this country plan to take their vacations every year and head to glaims or some other desert area to ride. and just how many do actualy look foreward to their 2 weeks off every year so they can load the family up and drive to the track?

i just thaught id throw that out there and see what type of reaction it might get. after all it dosnt seem like the manufactures realy take joe public in to mind when it comes to the new designs for bikes. i mean realy can anyone name guys that race quads on the mx tracks on a regular basis.gncc races are all that you realy ever hear about never the quad supercross..every single year we hear about ricki carmichael and jeremy mcgrath and mike larocco tearing up the stadiums all aacross the country. hell there are guys comming in from europe to race the american supercross but no quads? so do we realy need all the quads to be designed for track rididng??? why hasnt yamaha came out with a design for the average joe. i get the fact that everything is 4stroke these days. but wouldnt it be great if they came out with a 4stroke that the average guy could buy and enjoy..

thats just my 2 cents..what do you guys think

My dad and his brothers used to ride an event here called Cherry Creek. My uncle used to ride through the desert marking the course too.

That was back in the day before an actual off road bike. Mostly they were BullTaco bikes, and other road bikes stripped down to race.

He said they'd line up 100 bikes and go. Run what you brung, and first one across the finish line wins.

Sage brush, desert washes, gullys etc.... track didn't matter. Just finishing the race is what mattered.

I agree this sport is moving up. Last year our local track had an average of about 5 quads. This year its up to about 10-15 . Hell, one night we had 23 I think it was. I'm never letting go of my banshee, I race supercross with it and love representing the old beast

I prefer riding in the open or bush. Went to a track this week end, I cant say it was great. Barely get into third gear and I must add that it could be the fact that I'm still too afraid of the big jumps the other riders were pulling off. :o

Basically I would rather ride on soft thick sand in between bushes.

Just my 2c :)

Thats all theres been for years is average joe quads that you had to dump a shit load of cash into just to race. Its about time we finally gettin serious race quads and some factory support

Posted

yes i realize that race style quads are wanted by some riders..but my point here is that now the only quads that the factories are putting out that are worth a shit are the race style quads..where is the yfz 450 for the average guy? something comfortable that you dont have to raise the steering stem? all these new bikes are not comfortable. yeah they are set up for tracks, but what about those of us who dont ride tracks..what is out there that is a good comfortable all around woods desert mountain and sand bike???? oh yeah the banshee. thats all..the honda 400ex? what a dog. there isnt anything to replace the banshee or honda fourtax 250r that rides as comfortable?

I myself would love to do some desert races, always thought it to be cool.. Here awhile back Scott had a good idea of having a HQ ride out at Baja. :headbang: (where is Scott?)

When it comes down to it, the really only reason, I live in Texas, I would love to load up and move to Beverly... Well maybe not that far west but somewhere around Colorado or northern New Mexico or Arizona.. :headbang:

Been thinking of MXing only just because I want to get my boy involved in the sport, he's gotta get competitve soon I don't want that boy's natural talent to goto waste (like his daddy's). He's got a love for riding a bigger love than any of us on here could ever have.

My goal was to have him in some sort of comp. by 5, that didn't work..

I can't finacially (sp? Geez can't even spell that shit no wonder) get it done as of now. I started the AFRO site just for him hoping and praying that I could get some money coming from there, well I havn't made but maybe only $25 commision and that was from parts my brother ordered and parts I ordered for me and my friends. I get a descent amount of traffic there (matter of fact 5000 visitors as of today just since May) just no one is buying..

Cant' even think about sponsorship for him until he can be seen in action under a competive enviroment.

The only way would be to sell off all of our rides, including the shee and getting him a Quad. Can't do that, not because of my selfishness to ride, it's just that I think he would lose interest if he was the only rider...

God damn it, I am getting F'n tears writing this..

$$$$ is the bottom line for me.. Shit if I could get setup out yonder way, with a job house and descent schooling for the kids I be there in a heart beat..

When AFRO actually takes off and I can quit my job, buy a Bright yellow MotorCoach and just write the races off as advertizing or some shit....

screwit I got way off topic.. banghead
