So, my Banshee is being a PITA to start!!! It just takes forever. Last time I rode it, I actually pushstarted it with another quad. It took four times before it got going. Once it starts, it runs like a champ.

Any of you guys have any suggestions? I am a Banshee newbie, so I would appreciate help from more experienced folks.

Thanks in advance.

How long have you had your shee John. I would start by pulling the plugs out and check condition if you don't know what your looking at put a new set in. If you can check the compression at the same time. sounds a bit tired to me. :shrugani:

I picked it up a couple of months ago. It bought it from a friend who had it in storage and didn't get to ride it too often.

When this started, I threw a new set of plugs in it. The old ones looked great and I checked for spark... it was good.

I got to ride it quite a bit with no problems before this happened..... And like I said, once it runs, it runs great.

What should the compression be at? I'll check it tomorrow.

Since it could be tired, how do I wake this puppy up? Thanks!

are you using your choke when you try to start it...

Yes. I have tried half choke... Full Choke... No choke... about 3/4 throttle while starting

does it start good after you have had it running? if it does, i would try cleaning the carbs. compression should be 110-130 on a stock bike, unless your way up in the mountains it will be less.

It does start up just fine after it's running. Maybe a good ol' carb cleaning will do the trick. I kinda wonder if some of the K&N oil didn't get in there and gunk them up... I cleaned the filter but I know from previous experience that I dont' need a lot of oil, and use it sparingly, but who knows.

check your reeds also, if there hanging open it will be hard to start.

Kinda a two stroke beginner here. I understand where/what they are. But will I screw anything up by checking them? I was kinda thinking it could be them also. I was looking to do a carbon fiber upgrade, so now might be the time to do it. :)

if your looking at them and they are not completely closed you can flip them or replace them.if there cracked or chipped replace them.

v-force 2 works great don't know about the 3's

Sounds like it's time for a new topend. When your bike's cold the piston is so worn that it doesn't create enough compression to start easily. Once the bike warms up, the piston expands, and creates some more compression. Check you compression when the bike's cold. Good luck.

When you say topend, are you referring to the head or just a new piston set?

Thanks!

My friend had this EXACT problem.

turns out he was running way too much compression. But also had other problems timing advanced too far, wasent getting proper spark from stator etc.

He could only start it when it was warm or he had to have it towed by a truck to start it.

It could also be your stator, or ignition coil causing the problem, also make sure there is nothing in your pilot jets.

If the carbs are adjusted properly you should have to give it no throttle to start.

Topend = Cylinder Bore, Hone, Pistons, Rings, bearings gaskets etc...Pretty easy to do the work yourself but may want some help if your a beginner. Better to find someone to teach you than to take it to a shop...(other than for the bore and hone)

If you go this route also check the crank to make sure it is in spec while it is apart.

I posted Stator specs the other day in the forum I would check that 2nd to cleaning the carbs and your pilot jets and checking compression. You should always check the compression with the bike warm.

I think V-force 2 and 3 are about the same performance wise.

Thanks for all the help and resommendations....

BTW. This started out of the blue. That is what boggles me the most. I haven't adjusted anything on the quad since I got it. I'll check it out tomorrow. Neighbors won't be to happy if it starts by chance at this hour.
