I jacked the shee up and noticed the axle will move side to side about 1/16 of an inch. My question is, should there be any play there? Ive looked in my clymers and cant find the info I need. Also what kind of tool do I need to check my axle, to see if it is straight?

The allowable run out is 1.5mm or 0.06 in. 1/16 in = 0.0625 in. so it may be OK. On pages 294 and 295 in the climers manual, it tells you how to inspect the axle and check runout with a dial indicator.

shouldn`t be any play if the bearings are good and the lock nuts are tight at zero torque. could be the signs of bearings getting ready to go.it`s a good idea to buy pivot bearings and axle bearings at the same time.one time i said to myself, "let me just get one more ride out of these axle bearings". well needless to say i toasted the bearings and burned up the side of my carrier.and i posessed the new bearings.

There should be zero endplay (side to side). There is a spacer between the bearing inner races that spaces the bearings to their proper place. This allows you to tighten the hell out of them without preloading them. If you tighten the hell out of them and the axle becomes harder to turn, it is because you have worn out the bearings/bearing fits and the alignment is no longer right. You will have to tear into it and see what the damage is.

Ducman, Just an FYI: Runout is different than endplay. Runout refers to the trueness of the axle, or a bend.

I know the difference between endplay and runout, I kinda red into it that he bent his axel in a crash or something since he said he "jacked up" his banshee and since he asked how to tell if his axel was straight. I figured the side to side may have been a wobble when turning the axel. His problem may be as simple as tightening the axel nuts. Either way, runout or endplay if he reads pages 293-295 he can figure it out.

I landed pretty hard to far on one side of the bike, thats why I was asking. Then I jacked to check it out and noticed the play if you move the wheel toward the footpeg. Do you think im going to need new bearings? RMATV has All Balls and Pivot Works bearing kits. About how long dos it take to change them out? Also where can I get a greese fitting to lube the bearings in the carrier?

a hardware store or mans garage should have grease zerk fittings...if you move the wheel towards the footpeg very much something might be wrong..or there is just a little wear on something, it could be in your front swingarm pivot bearings, wheel hub, etc...i woulden't really worry about it...just wear and tear, i bet if i checked to see if my tire would push towards the footpeg that it would a little..not worth replacing good bearings to end up with the same situation IMO

Your right, your wheel should not move towards your foot peg.

If you can see that the movement is in your carrier, then you should disassemble it remove your axle and bearings. Make sure there is no damage (Wear) to the carrier, including the spacer between the bearings (This spacer is a certain length and if it is worn smaller it will need replaced). Get some new bearings and seals. Reassemble and tighten the shit out of the axle nut.
